CENTRE-back Michael Nelson tonight became Scunthorpe United's ninth and final recruit of the January transfer window.

The Norwich City defender has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old, who helped the Canaries to the League One title last term, has struggled to win back his place in the starting line-up at Carrow Road after suffering an ankle injury in August.

Nelson is a vastly-experienced figure, having made more than 350 league appearances in a career which started in non-league football with the likes of Spennymoor and Bishop Auckland.

He was a target for the Iron when he joined Norwich from Hartlepool on a free transfer in the summer of 2009.

Nelson's arrival, which was finalised within an hour of the transfer window closing, completed a hectic 24 hours at Glanford Park, which included the arrival of Joe Garner on loan and the exits of Jonathan Forte and Martyn Woolford to Southampton and Bristol City respectively.

“For a squad that is supposed to be small and a budget that is supposed to be inferior, does it really make good financial sense to have six centre-backs on the books (Nelson, Jones, Mirfin, Canavan, Raynes, Reid). I appreciate that we have had injury problems this season and obviously I'm happy to have a leader. But I worry about the drain on the resources, perhaps we should have let our best defender David Mirfin go since he's out of contract and there has been interest in the past, could've got £400k or so for him.

As it is now, I fully expect the younger ones, Raynes and Canavan, to be sent out on loan once the emergency loan window opens up.”

“Exactly the sort of player we should be signing. A leader and we now have a strong spine with him and Reid, Hughes in midfield and Miller upfront.

Lots of experience plus more or less 2 players per position apart from the left wing obviously!

Who's going to play left side?”

“Bara obviously had a lot of faith in our back four. Potentially a new keeper between the sticks (In Lillis) Nolan, Reid, Nelson and Hughes. Know Bara said that Jan was going to be tough on some of the players but how many people did he actually get rid of like he said/suggested? Were they the ones that needed to go? Nice to see so many in but I think more needed to leave.

Oh and I forgot to mention our other new defender Andy Wright!”
