Midfielder Michael O'Connor believes a change in formation could be the key to turning around Scunthorpe United's fortunes.

And he hopes the same will also prove true on a personal level.

Having previously admitted his performances had not lived up to his own high standards this season, O'Connor revelled in a more attacking role at Exeter City.

Part of a three-man midfield, along with Jimmy Ryan and Sam Togwell, he helped the Iron claim their first point since October.

"I was given a different role," explained the Northern Irishman.

"I played just advanced of a three and thought I did allright.

"The week before, against Carlisle, I was playing more of a defensive role.

"I can do that but I'm more of an advanced player, I like to play further up.

"It was good playing with Jimmy in there. The two of us could help each other, with Togs just sitting there and I thought it worked.

"I think that's the best we've played in a while.

"The formation helped us, it made us keep possession a bit better in midfield."

The Iron remain just one point above the drop zone heading into their Boxing Day battle with Bury.

And, recalling the experience of last year's Championship struggles, O'Connor has stressed the importance of staying outside the bottom four.

"It's important that we don't go into the relegation zone, at any time," he said.

"Last season started off well and just went downhill.

"I've said many times before, hard work gets you up the table and gets the wins."
