I am not sure what to make of the proposal to allow local police to log in to base via libraries or schools. I suppose it's sort of a good idea, but how much difference it will make is anybody's guess. It will provide a few more IT jobs in Hull, but what we want is more bobbies on the beat in Scunthorpe, not sitting in nice warm libraries jabbing away at keyboards.

What happens when libraries and schools are shut ? By the time the local area PC has got all the padlocks undone, the security whatsit disabled, the power switched on, the computer logged on and a plastic cup of coffee to hand, they might just as well have gone back to what we used to call the police station. Get an emergency while you're there, well, no trouble. All you have to do is log off, gulp down your coffee, switch off all the lights, set the security system, lock the doors, get in your car, drive through the school gates, get out of your car, shut and padlock the gates, get back into your car and Bingo! you're on the case !

Alternatively, why not bring back hi-tech versions of those Tardis-like police boxes so beloved of Dr Who ? But I suppose they'd be vandalised. Nothing is sacred these days. How about giving patrolling police some sort of hand held smartphone device like meter readers and courier drivers? Just trying to be helpful, ma'am. Just trying to be helpful.

“What a load of tosh this article is. Is there a point, or just the ramblings of someone with nothing better to do.
Give them some sort of hand held smart phone, and what will this do exaclty, anything different to the airwaves radio *** phone they all carry already??
What a load of non evidenced, ill written gibberish.”

“Our police don't do technology. We have small, highly functional mobile phones, they have bricks. When smart glasses are introduced, we'll have lightweight practical ones, the Police will have rubber welding goggles with pebble lenses. The only reason they don't wear flares is that they haven't caught up with them yet.”
