Obesity levels among children, pregnant women and mums who have recently given birth are higher in two districts of Scunthorpe - and in Barton - than elsewhere across North Lincolnshire, it has been revealed.

Now concerned bosses at North Lincolnshire Council and NHS North Lincolnshire are looking to tackle the problem by appointing a specialist advisory worker.

Councillor Carl Sherwood (Brigg and Wolds), Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Sport and Leisure, has now decided the authority should accept the £28,806 offered by NHS North Lincolnshire to develop the Start4Life programme.

It has been agreed to appoint a Start4Life Activator on a fixed term contract for 15 months. He/she will work 30 hours a week.

Between 2009 and 2011, 58 per cent of expectant mothers across North Lincolnshire were classed as being of unhealthy weight.

A council report says consultations carried out with midwives and health visitors showed a need to increase levels of physical activity to address maternal and childhood obesity.

Parents in Scunthorpe who were asked to give their views identified a need for more activities to be made available to children under the age of five.

Scunthorpe North is defined as covering the following council wards: Burringham & Gunness, Town and Crosby.

Scunthorpe South takes in Brumby, Frodingham, Kingsway & Lincoln Gardens, Ashby and Bottesford.
