Ofgem warning fuels fears of UK energy shortfall
ENERGY: Britain is facing the rising risk of an energy shortfall within three years, Ofgem has warned.
And it said shortfalls could see National Grid cutting energy to businesses by 2015, to "avoid families being left in the dark".
The energy regulator said energy supplies were being hit by tough European Union environmental laws and the closure of ageing coal and oil-fired power stations.
It predicts the amount of spare capacity in the UK could plunge from current historic high levels of 14 per cent to 4 per cent in 2015/16.

Alistair Buchanan, chief executive of Ofgem, said: "The unprecedented challenges facing Britain's energy industry to attract the investment to deliver secure, sustainable and affordable energy supplies for consumers still remain."
The findings come just days after Hull And Humber Chamber Of Commerce warned that the Government's seemingly lacklustre approach to renewable energy was holding back investment and sparking fears over sustainability of the UK's future energy mix, as reported in the Mail.
The president of the British Chambers Of Commerce is now set to take the concerns of local chambers to Downing Street.

“Why are people burying their heads in the sand? The wind is so light over most of Britain today. That what you have in windpower is nothing. The coal plants are as always carrying the load. Yet you want more wind,& less coal. The fact is that if you want to maintain availability you need fossil fuel plants & no wind. Then you have lots of shale gas available to.
It maintain availabilty you must install more fossil fuel plants. Failure to do so means freezing in the dark. Get with it, be like Canada, & drop Kyoto now.”
