Outdoor music festival gets go-ahead
LICENSING watchdogs have given the go-ahead for Scunthorpe to host an outdoor rock music festival this summer for the first time in more than two decades.
Music promoter Jez Lee was granted a premises licence to stage the event at the town's Sheffield Park on August 14 - despite objections from residents.

Promoter Jez Lee has been granted a licence to stage a Fake Festival in Sheffield Park, Scunthorpe, in August
Mr Lee, 38, who earlier had agreed to cut the self-styled Scunthorpe Fake Festival by almost two hours, told North Lincolnshire Council's licensing (activities) sub-committee: "We are not here to cause intrusions for the residents."
But residents in the Sheffield Park area have not yet ruled out an appeal to the magistrates' court after councillors turned down their protests which included a petition.
David Morley, whose family lives near the park, yesterday told the meeting there were far more suitable venues such as Glanford Park and Quibell Park for the event to be staged at.
He claimed the event would attract more than 200 cars, adding to the parking and traffic problems in the area.
Mr Lee said he was in his third year of running Fake Festivals around Britain and Sheffield Park would be his 32nd.
And he stressed the event would be a family-orientated affair with fun and facilities provided for little ones.
He also said there would be security and more toilets than normally required, while litter patrols were carried out every 30 minutes.
It is set to be Scunthorpe's first open air rock event since 1987 on August 14. Tickets cost £15 for adults and £10 for under 18s.

“Yeah, cause Glanford Park is a viable alternative?
Think about it, I happen to know what kinda money you would be talking about to hire Glanford Park and it simply would not be possible for a festival on that scale. Plus do you realise what the capacity of Glanford park is? Much more than what would be necessary for the festival.
Are traffic problems really going to cause that much hassle for one day?
Its people like this that promote a negative image of the local music scene, there is no wonder local music around Scunthorpe is dying when people are so negative about music. Why is it a problem, its better for local youth to have something to do than be defacing your walls with graffiti surely?
Also, what about Squarefest, the Telegraph seem to have forgotten that that ever existed?
Maybe someone should be congratulating Jez Lee on his continuing effort to bring music into the rural community?”

“Why must people always be nagative about EVERYTHING?? It's a one day event, not a full summer of loud music or anything. And it'll be good to have an event that kids and teens can enjoy and get to easily, given there's hardly anything that you can get to without a car around here.”

“Those who are moaning, have you been to one of these ?
Jez organizes them so well. The point of them is to have them in middle of community so people can walk to them.
We have had 3 at Haxey. 1000 people at each one, and no trouble. Most people walk so then can have a beer, and there is a fantastic family atmosphere. The minute you say "Rock Concert" everyone thinks drugs, violance and drunks. The facts are that these events are an amazing success and bring income and money into the local area.”

“I think it is a great idea to have this event but I also think it is a silly place to have it, one of the other sites suggested would be much better for everyone, plenty of room to park and the young ones could let off steam as much as they please there”

“maybe it will give everybody something to do. but the point is, sheffield park isnt the ideal place to hold a rock concert when just yards away is peoples homes. As David Morley said there is places that are more convient than sheffield park, eg: glandford park, and also adding you cannot hold over 200 cars on sheffield park ave where i live, will cause mayhem. Stupid place to hold this event”
