SCUNTHORPE United will today hold an inquiry into their failing floodlights at Glanford Park.

Yesterday's match was held up twice with lengthy delays totalling 26 minutes – and might have been abandoned by referee Andy Haines.

It's the second time this season the Iron have been hit by floodlight failure.

It happened in the home game with Middlesbrough in early November, when the game was put in doubt prior to kick-off.

"We will be getting the electricians in today to have a look at it," said United safety officer Alan Welsh.

"We want to make sure as far as we can that this does not happen again."

Welsh confirmed the floodlights had failed when fuses became over-heated.

"This is the time of the year when people in the surrounding area turn up their heating – and for some reason it overloads the system," he said.

"We will get the electricians to look at balancing the supply.

"This will probably take a couple of days and involve a lot of moving around the electrics we have.

"First one fuse overheated yesterday, then another.

"After the second failure we had to ensure everything was right because it was our last fuse."

“Why would anyone need to meet the guy to know the explanation as printed in the paper is b*llocks? Might be what he was told but doesn't make it smart to report it as fact.”

“Anyone else try buying an Everton ticket after the match - computer system down so obviously that stopped them selling tickets for cash...

What a laugh - time to sign up Frank Spencer and Benny Hill to compliment this shower!

    Up the Iron!”

“what a collection of stupid comments you have put about one of the finest gentlemen in the area, total lack of respect. I hope it is found to be from a power surge (which is possible), have you never had a fuse blow at your house or when you are waiting in the dole queue? happy new year losers”

“puzzled, scunthorpe, have you ever met the guy? Cos I bet if you had you would have a lot more respect for him. Merely a comment unto a possible reason why the fuses overheat and that makes him an idiot does it? Has he asked the residents to turn their heating down and appliances off? Stop being pathetic. Like he said there would be an electrician there today to resolve the problem. I agree it is a problem that needs to be sorted for which Mr Welsh (thats welsh with an 's' not a 'c') is in the process of doing. Was he the contractor who put the floodlights up and tested the bulbs/fuses? I guarantee he wasn't. So stop the childish finger pointing. Lets focus on Scunny "trying" to stay in the Championship.”

“As others have said, technically impossible and one of the funniest collections of spurious excuses I have ever heard. Also begs the question that if anyone in the club believes all this mumbo jumbo, how much do they get ripped off by their contractors?”

“So thats it then, for future evening games, they can only go ahead after the residents of Lodge Moor turn off all appliances and turn the heating down. Welch, how stupid do your comments look now. Yesterday was a farce, and the club safety officer is an idiot. To be fair we did not deserve to lose though.”

“If you believe this you are as gullible as if you believe transfer speculation and improvement. As usual the floodlights will have been Whartonised.

The excuse is just not technically possible and with a local electrical contractor on the sponge list I am surprised they have peddled it.

I hope that by now Wharton is holding his head in his hands and asking himself what he has done or does he just shrug it off like he does the increasing the fan number debacle?”

“The main problem was expecting Jerry to change the fuse,at least we had an ambulance at hand if he got this wrong.Anyway whats with a safety officer when we can only get 5k through the gate, when we are playing so crap.Another waste of a wage i fear ."UP THE IRON"!!!”
