PM: Decision on bridge tolls rise soon
GORDON Brown has pledged the Government will look at all aspects of the case against raising the Humber Bridge tolls.
The Prime Minister said his new Transport Secretary Lord Adonis would make a decision as soon as possible.
-

ASSURANCES: Prime Minister Gordon Brown has spoken to the Telegraph about the decision on whether to raise Humber Bridge tolls.
There have been fears that the decision to allow the cost of a single journey to rise from £2.70 to £2.90 would be rubber-stamped by new transport secretary Lord Adonis.
But the Prime Minister told the Telegraph: "I think I can assure you that the Department for Transport and the new transport minister, Andrew Adonis, are considering all aspects of the independent inspector's report following the inquiry.
"The decision on the board's application for a toll increase will be made as soon as possible.
"It is up to Lord Adonis now to make an announcement."
Humber Toll Action chairwoman Jenny Walton welcomed the Prime Minister's comments.
"If they are going to take into account all aspects, I do hope they will take into account what all the witnesses had to say on tolls being abolished and the debt wiped out," she said.
"Having a toll of any sort is prohibitive to anything we want to do."

“Thats the thing Rob, we have to look after ourselves first, sort our own problems out before we start trying to help others.
Unfortunately this Government seem to think the opposite and think nothing of blowing millions of pounds on dubious projects in foreign lands.
Don`t get me wrong I think that as a civilised and developed country we should help others, but NOT at the expense or the detriment of our own country.
All the money we`ve spent in the last year or so in foreign aid will have easily wiped out the Humber Bridge debt”

“re foreign aid, in total in 2009, Britain has already provided Zimbabwe with £60million in aid. Mugabe who is fervently anti British and blames us for most of the problems in his country yet is quite happy to accept money from us.
That £60million would make a nice dent in the Humber Bridge debt which currently stands at £350million.
Oh and lets not forget the £1.5million that we recently sent to Nigeria to help them promote gay rights. My particular favourite though is the several million pounds that we sent to Kenya in 2008 so that they could produce a tv series called "The Team".

“Sorry phred I dont agree with you, companies are closing every day, people in this country need the money and we keep sending it to 3rd world countries. instead of sending money send condoms and maybe doctors to stop them breeding like rabbits, its about time we got something back,
cutting or scrapping the bridge tolls will help people find work on both sides of the Humber.
sorry if this offends people”

“L.J & Jayne Berry
Quite agree with you on the scrapping of tolls and the 'shot in the arm' for the area.
Not too keen on LJ's comments re 3rd World - hopefully we live in a humane society and even when were in a time when there's not much cash slopping about, we can still aid those more desperate then ourselves.”
