Passion and flair are what fans want in Iron's new manager

HAVING compared football with a Take That concert, Official Supporters Club vice-chairman Graham Godson, is prepared to exercise a little patience when it comes to filling Scunthorpe United's hotseat.

Given the Iron's position in the Championship table and the need for rebuilding in the summer, there is little room for error in selecting the next man in charge.

A return to football with flair is crucial, according to Godson, as is someone with a real passion for the job.

"We need someone somewhere between Mark Lillis, Nigel Adkins and Brian Laws," he said.

"If we could put those three together, I think we would have a successful manager.

"A lot of football is about man management skills and Nigel got the best out of his players.

"Lawsy, for some reason, had the pulling power to attract players.

"And Lillis had the fun side of football with him.

"You need a bit of all of them.

"Whoever comes in, they've got to have a passion for football and for the town.

"If you come here, you've got to be prepared to work for the pay packet.

"It's a bit like Take That, you've got to entertain people.

"If you don't, people will stop coming through the turnstiles.

"We've been playing cracking football for the last two years, but people don't like the style we've been playing this year.

"We want to see good, attacking football."

The link with former United boss Laws refuses to go away.

Godson admits he would not be averse to his return, although he does not expect it to be in a managerial capacity.

"I think he might come back as a director of football," said the Scunthorpe fan.

"I don't know the situation between the chairman Steve Wharton and Brian Laws, but I know they're good friends, or amicable friends.

"I would hope, if Brian doesn't want to be considered for the job, he might have a bit of an input in the decision.

"He could help choose a suitable candidate.

"I don't think the fans will have a problem what Brian Laws does to help the club, if it helps the club.

"I would be quite happy with Brian Laws.

"But there is some good pedigree being mentioned.

"Phil Parkinson has got a cracking record, I like him, or Danny Wilson.

"I just hope we get the right man for the job."

Keep Laws away from the club - he has no positive impact whatsoever!”

“So you want a rubbish manager AND you want less supporters through the turnstiles because some people in internetland have upset you? Wow, you are some supporter! Don't suppose you've had any luck finding those posts of mine where I called for Baraclough to be sacked have you "Sue"?”

“Less than 20% wanted Laws on a poll conducted on that rubbish Iron Bru site, which has the tendancy to attract those spouting the biggest load of hot air you are ever likely to hear. So I don't really think you can use that as a marker...
I personally want Lawsy back as there are a lots of posters on Iron Bru that have said they won't come again if he's in charge. Brilliant! No more fans64, Bad Apple, alcazar etc, etc...*smiley face*”

“Statistically less than20% want Laws here as manager when a direct question is answered.

I would have thought that points to a new, different and unconnected manager coming to the club if Wharton wants to reconnect with the fans including those he has lost.

He made a brave decision to take on Bara, a braver one to sack him so lets hope he doesn't undo things my taking the megalomaniac player bully back on again.”
