Protesters stage demo at animal circus
A PEACEFUL protest was held in Scunthorpe outside a circus which uses animals in its show.
The elephant act at the Great British Circus, which was held at Glanford Park, is the first in the UK for more than 10 years.
Protesters held banners and handed out leaflets, talking to people as they arrived to watch the final performance at Scunthorpe United's football ground yesterday.
Protester Jessica Groling (21) said she was pleased with the turn-out.
She added: "Circus animals are kept in confinement in surroundings that are entirely unsuitable, for their entire lives.
"Elephants may travel up to 14 miles a day in the wild. They are highly sociable animals that will suffer mentally and physically when held in captivity."
Humberside Police turned up to monitor the protest.
Sgt Phil Moore said: "Officers were in attendance to ensure the protest went peacefully, which it did."

“Its pretty obvious from many of the pro-circus comments here that these people are just making excuses for their own selfishness! Circuses which have animals performing for the supposed "entertainment" are cruel as Bill Travers has expounded often. If you are of the mentality that finds animals abuse entertaining can't you just stay in and watch Gordon Ramsay instead? As for hippies many of us antis hold down professional jobs although you don't have to have a degree to see that only people with very small minds could find a dancing animal entertaining.
There are some good ideas on here though. Yes, lets get rid of pets if that means that selfish humans cannot go out and get an animal (presumably for their entertainment again) on a whim and then people like me who take in other people's unwanted pets could have the time to take a holiday! In the meantime perhaps wone of the animal circus supporters could enlighten about what they find so entertaining about watching a captive animal forced to perform stupid tricks?”

“Wow, you are one bunch of scary people in Scunthorpe - you'd be dangerous if you had more than one brain cell between you. It's like stepping back in time reading some of your disgraceful comments - and you seem to think you're amusing - oh dear (apologies to the more evolved amongst you). I've never been so ashamed of my home town!”

“Ban animal rights protestors. We could even test shampoo and perfume on them, god knows they need it.”

“How glad I am to have left a country where there are so many do gooders and others who just can't keep their nose out of some-one else's business.
It's great to be in Australia, the only country in the world where you can legally eat the National Emblem.
Come in Skippy and let's take your coat off, you're staying for dinner.”

“well done guys for standing up to these idiots... but as someone previously said, you shouldn't expect much from the scunthorpe lot... first i heard of this circus was actully last year when the guy attacked the bbc reporter. one hell of a violent chap eh! i'd be interested to hear if they're coming back up here anytime soon and how can i find out if i want to get involved? never been on a protest like this before myself but doesn't surprise me at all what you were saying how the circus chavs go round egging people's cars to stir up stuff. how immature. this cruelty should be stopped, it's sick and unnecessary, quite an embarassment to this country. thought we was progressive ha!!”
