THERE are few people better qualified in the art of the penalty shoot-out than former England international Stuart Pearce.

The former Nottingham Forest full-back was in town this week to open Bottesford Town's new £350,000 changing room complex.

Pearce missed a penalty for England against West Germany in the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

But he perhaps even more famously avenged that miss with a passion ravaged, thumping spot-kick against Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 96.

His famous celebration of unbridled joy and relief made him a national hero, but Pearce has also been involved from the other side of the white-line.

The 47-year-old saw his England Under-21 side lose 13-12 to eventual winners, Holland, in Euro 2007, meaning if Fabio Capello wishes to speak to a man in the know, then Pearce is a pretty good place to go.

"I've had experience at it as a player, losing two and winning one shoot-out, and as a manager as well at Under-21 level, where we've won one and lost one," Pearce told the Telegraph.

"But certainly we feel at Under-21 level that we're prepared as well as any team has ever been and that has stood us in good stead this summer just gone.

"We're practicing now in my Under-21 squad to hopefully go to a finals in 2011.

"Fabio will have in his mind how much practice he wants but there is experience there if he wants it."
