WITNESSES to a fatal Christmas Day car crash could hold 'vital' clues, police have said.

Detectives have launched an investigation into the smash on Wells Street, Scunthorpe, in which 55-year-old Yolanta Marie Kutrybala was killed.

The Polish victim was in Scunthorpe to visit her family over the festive period when she was involved in the accident shortly before 6pm on December 25.

Investigators have said they urgently need information on the occupants of the other car, who fled the scene.

"It is vital we hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, I would urge anyone with information to get in touch with us," said Humberside Police spokesman James Cartwright.

Mrs Kutrybala was a back seat passenger in a silver Citroen Xsara which was also carrying the driver and a front seat passenger when the collision happened.

The Citroen and an older style green BMW 320 collided as the Citroen pulled from Wells Street onto Glebe Road at the roundabout with Normanby Road.

Both vehicles were severely damaged while the 32-year-old male driver of the Citroen suffered non life-threatening back injuries and the 30-year-old female passenger in the front seat sustained whiplash.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the green BMW being driven prior to the crash as well as anyone who witnessed the collision itself," said Mr Cartwright.

Police have arrested four people in connection with the incident; three men aged 25, 24 and 20, and an 18-year-old woman were questioned by police and have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
