Police have issued a warning about people selling household items door-to-door.

The salespeople usually tell the householder they are on some kind of rehabilitation programme which is being supported by the Probation Service.

The caller usually shows some kind of identity card which includes their photo. They carry large holdalls which are full of items such as dusters, dishcloths, clothes pegs.

Humberside Police is warning that this scheme is not being supported by the Probation Service in any way.

The Probation Service does not issue any ID cards under any circumstances.

Police in North Lincolnshire have teamed up with a Nottinghamshire Police initiative which encourages people to ignore this sort of door-to-door selling.

The force's slogan for this campaign is 'if in doubt, shut them out!'

Anyone who receives such a call is urged not to buy anything from them and report them to the police as soon as possible by calling 101.

“In the sixth paragraph the word support has been replaced with ignore. Trust me, I am gifted with a photographic memory.”

“And that would be the seventh paragraph and not the fifth.”

“I think HarryWorth if you read it properly it says "encourages people to IGNORE this sort of door-to-door selling" which in plain English means don't entertain them and shut the door on them.

“I thing the Telegraph's star writer Victoria Slack has got more than a little muxed-ip when composing the fifth paragraph....
I think she'll find that the police are DISCOURAGING people from supporting this form of door-to-door selling.
    Check your work !!!”
