ALAN Knill says he will stick with his philosophy of refusing to break the bank to bring new signings to Scunthorpe United – even if it means missing out on players.

Deals for Andrew Tutte and Jimmy Ryan are close to being completed, but the Iron manager has revealed he has suffered a couple of setbacks in his search to make the club competitive in League One next term.

Despite that disappointment, the 46-year-old is pleased with the progress he is making ahead of a meeting with a striker today.

"I've got to say I was hopeful we'd get the deals all done in May, but it's just not like that," Knill told the Telegraph.

"You could go into the season and still be looking for players, but I'm quite happy.

"Players that we wanted we have more or less got in.

"If we've lost them, we've lost them because they're not the right ones for us sometimes.

"We've had two setbacks. But two out of whatever isn't too bad, sometimes you can't do anything about it.

"We think the players we're trying to sign are for the right reasons and we want them to come for the right reasons.

"Money is often a big motivator for footballers but we can't afford to offer what they want sometimes.

"We always start off with the same opening, that if you come play for us, the chances are you're not going to get rich.

"But, if you work hard and work hard with us, you may get rich afterwards.

"We will give you the chance and you go out there and show everyone how good you can be.

"When you see the players who have come through the club, they have gone on to have really good careers.

"That's something the club has been really good at and that's what we're trying to sell to players.

"We will help you to develop. And the style of football we try to play, we think brings out the best in really good footballers.

"All we can do is try to sell that the best we can. If they come, then brilliant. If not then they didn't want to come for the right reasons."

“Managed relegation last season after the previous seasons attempt failed. Managed consolidation next season has already started. All the spin from the club about staying up last season and going back up this next season should be taken with a pinch of salt. Wharton is happy in the lower leagues - out of his comfort zone any higher. Mr. W has proven that getting incapable players in allows him to get the team where he wants us to be not where the team or the fans want us to be. Why do you think Woolford was sold in January - he was scoring goals - he could have kept us up. Why do you think Hayes wasn't offered a contract to keep him here, why do you think we were force fed Forte, why do you think Adkins got out when he could. You could believe the club's official line on these matters if you want.”

“Whilst I commend the club not wishing to throw there money at heavy transfer fees and salaries, I do believe that there is very little money available from the directors. I am convinced that they do not want CC football at this stage. This would of course cost them some serious cash, updated ground, decent players (transfer fees) and of course that age old problem salaries. SALARIES seems to be the big problem at Scunthorpe and appears to be the stalling point of many a good signing. That old adage "You pay peanuts you get monkeys" is so true in commerce and football. Whilst we continue to only look at non league or no football club players we really don't stand a chance of getting back to CC any time soon if ever. UTI”
