THE Prime Minister's office has commented on Corus' decision to axe thousands of jobs.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "Obviously it's a matter of great regret that Corus have had to take measures to make workers redundant."

He added that the Jobcentre and other agencies would be offering support to help those affected.

A total of 93 jobs are to go at Scunthorpe's Corus plant with 2,500 in total at the company's sites across the UK.

“the banks have a greater ability to wreck the economy and cause widespread devastation than anyone else - so, in a nutshell, the banks have government by the short ands, hence gov't bailing them out - is it tantamount to blackmail one wonders????
As for jobccentres being on hand to help - somebody is being a but of a comedian methinks - I thought we were (FINALLY) in recession - so where are they going to magic the jobs from??? Are Gordon and Co. resigning - do they need new blood in government????? Is that where all the jobs will be??????”

“I am on holiday at the moment but have been in contact with my colleagues at Rotherham. My department will be disbanded and everyone in my department is at risk.
Its odd that these redundancies are only happening here - maybe its something to do with the Dutch government doing something about it, whereas our government just want to sit on their hands and let market forces decide.”
