He has performed throughout Europe and the USA, as well as touring the major cities of South Africa.

Michael Nutbrown, a member of the Scunthorpe Concert Society committee, said the booking was a coup for the town.

He said: "It is quite a coup and we have done it twice in consecutive years.

"Last year, we had Benjamin Grosvenor, who last week won two Gramophone awards.

"He has taken two top prizes for young musicians.

"Alessandro Taverna was in the Leeds piano competition and came third, although many people thought he should have come higher."

Mr Nutbrown said the audience could expect a near-world class performance when the pianist performs in Scunthorpe.

He said: "I think he will be world class in a year's time.

"He will have been in so much demand that he will not be available for societies like ours.

"The audience is going to have an absolutely cracking night of piano music."

Concerts in this year's series will be held at Brumby Engineering College in Scunthorpe, after taking place at John Leggott College in the past.

The switch comes because of re-development work at the West Common Lane site left its auditorium unavailable.

Other artists set to play as part of the 2012-13 programme include the Swiss Piano Trio, the London Concertante and the Brodowski String Quartet.

The Alessandro Taverna concert will begin at 7.30pm and tickets are £14 for adults, with accompanied children and full-time students admitted free.
