Proper local policing is what the public of Scunthorpe and district want Mr Commissioner and not an exhibition stand at Sainsbury's, says thisisscunthorpe columnist Hugh Rogers
Reading the Times (well I like the crossword!) this morning I see that my old mates the Metropolitan Police have apparently decided to close down their police stations and plan instead to interview suspects, victims and those with lost children or dogs in the local church or coffee bars or even the local football stadium. Of course in this area we are used to this sort of thing. In South Yorkshire the local police spent £7000 on 280 cardboard cutouts of policemen (and presumably policewomen, too) in a vain attempt to make up for the absence of living, breathing coppers on their streets. And many will remember how much safer they might have felt when it was announced that Humberside Police were to build what appeared to be new police stations near Westcliff and Crosby estates - only to have the cup of happiness dashed from their lips when it turned out that far from providing local residents with havens of wisdom and safety, all the police were doing was building themselves new "police bases". Which turned out so far removed from the old-fashioned "nick" - open all day and all night, seven days a week and presided over by a "kindly" station sargeant - as to be on another planet.
Perhaps when the new Police and Crime Commissioner gets his feet properly under the table, he could find a moment or two to find ways to give people what they actually want. Proper local policing - not an exhibition stand at Sainsbury's - and security on our streets provided by proper collar-feeling coppers, And get rid of that helicopter, its tendency to overfly my house at one o'clock in the morning is getting on my wick. As well as costing our "cash-strapped police force an arm and a leg.
