Quit cigs and help cancer patients
CANCER sufferers could benefit from smokers' cash thanks to a scheme to help people quit.
Lindsey Lodge Hospice fundraiser Mel Banham said he hoped getting quitters to donate money to cancer sufferers will give them an extra reason to stop smoking on No Smoking Day, Wednesday March 11.

A REAL DRAG: Smoking has been linked to several types of cancer, as well as heart and lung disease. Lindsey Lodge Hospice is encouraging smokers to kick the habit on No Smoking Day and raise money to help those already suffering the devastating effects the habit can have.
Mr Banham said: "We are looking for people willing to take up our Stop the Ash and Donate the Cash challenge.
"The sad fact is that our hospice nurses see the end result of cancer for many people.
"We thought that maybe if smokers could kick their habit and support charity by taking up our challenge it might help them make the important decision to go smoke-free."
Last year, a person died from smoking-related diseases every day of the year in North Lincolnshire.
There are three steps smokers need to make to take part in the challenge.
Step one is to make the big decision to quit smoking.
Step two is to get the support of family, friends and colleagues.
Step three is simply to donate the money normally spent on smoking to help Lindsey Lodge look after someone in real need of hospice care.
To take part in the challenge contact Mr Banham on 01724 843731 or e-mail: fundraising@lindseylodgehospice.org.uk.

“Why do these people always assume smokers want to give up?
A portion of the £10 - £12bn paid in tax by smokers already goes to the anti-smoking lobby. About four-fifths of the retail price of a packet of cigs is tax, some of which is then spent on persuading us not to smoke.
I do wish these people would leave off pestering and go back to just making us better when it all goes wrong.
The NHS used to be quite good at that sort of thing.”

“It's a bit of fresh air to read that a REAL charity can ask smokers to quit, without trying to push pharmaceutical rubbish on to them. I agree that that we should stop ASH.”

“Who cares about whether someone smokes or not. Who cares. My dad woke up one morning 40 years ago and decided there and then to stop smoking. 40 years later he wished he hadnt bothered giving up. Because he died of lung cancer anyway. And on his death bed, one of the last things he said to me was. "Son I have just wasted the last 40 years. I wish now I had kept on smoking"”

“Smoking will be the least of our problems when the economy collapses. which the way things are looking right now, is highly likely. So get out that cigar you saved for a rainy day and light it up and say to yourself. "Stuff them all"”

“Dont you get sick of these charities who keep asking for donations towards cures for cancer. And then when one is found , you are then told that the medication might cost you £30,000 a year, so you cant have it unless your rich. So whats the point in donating if the drugs turn out to expensive to have.”
