There appears, that the time has

come for the authorities to impose a 50 miles per hour speed limit on the A18

roadway from the Forest Pines roundabout to the roundabout at Morrison's,

including both up and down Mortal Ash hill.

The number of vehicle accidents

on this stretch of the road appears to be on the increase caused in my opinion

by excess speeding and really bad driving and a couldn't care less attitude by

some drivers.

I have lived, worked and

travelled in many countries throughout the world and have driven vehicles in

many of these and whilst there are always problems on the roads, I consider

that the standard of driving in this part of the world leaves a lot to be

desired.

Whilst the speed limit on Mortal

Ash hill is 70 mph there appears that in instances some drivers completely

ignore this and drive to 80 and 90mph.

Even when they get to the slowdown yellow road markings at the Morrison

end it makes little difference to some drivers and only brake at the last moment.    At this slow down part of the road even

artic lorries are still passing cars on the yellow lines which to me is not

acceptable.

The road that comes out of and

enters the Kirton Lindsey junction is a special area for some drivers as

indicated by the recent accident at this point on the up portion of the dual

carriage, where two cars had serious damage inflicted on them.   In addition, on the down side of the

dual carriageway some drivers joining the road from Kirton Lindsey area appear

to think they can pull out and join the main road at any point irrespective of

whether access is clear or not.

Even on other parts of roads

generally, some drivers, irrespective of traffic and road conditions, appear to

consider that the identified road speed limit is something to be continually

targeted, whether road conditions allow it not.

Whilst driving appears to be

getting more difficult as the volume of vehicles increases it indicates that

speed levels need to be revised and reduced and drivers, especially the younger

generation, should be so trained accordingly.

“Johnn25 has a valid point, the motorists I have been witnessing on the pitch black and/or foggy back roads to Lincoln over this winter, overtaking on blind bends at speed, doing horrific speeds through Kirton village has not been young lads in hatcbacks but middle aged men in saloons and estate cars!”

“In fairness to John25, he has a valid point. I have been working in Lincoln for the past 4 months and the driver I have seen doing horrific overtaking manouvres on blind bends in the pitch black and/or foggy conditions or tearing through villages at 80+ have not been young lads in Renault Clios etc, no they have been middle aged men in BMW saloons and Skoda Estate cars!!!”

    “Dear galashiels,
Just blame the younger generation yet again. I am sick to death of hearing that utter rubbish. Yes admittedly some younger drives lack experience however on the flip side off the coin 'older' drivers i.e 45+ are slow to react, unaware of changes to road conditions, do not use such things as indicators and I personally spotted people unable to check mirrors or take roundabouts appropriately.
In summary do not stereotype as you do and I have just done to prove a point. There are poor drivers from all age categories lowering the speed limit on mortal ash hill will solve little. One would think enforcement cameras are the way forward. Perhaps average along the whole stretch.
    Regards,
    An average motorist (Age 22)”

“Can I just say that not all blame can apportioned to drivers pulling on to Mortal Ash hill from the Kirton Lindsey junction, Mortal Ash hill is used as race track by a lot of motorists, ones that accelerate up the backside of someone merging from Kirton junction rather than politely slowing a bit and moving over as I do if I see someone trying to pull on. Those entering Mortal Ash from the Kirton jnc cannot legislate for the fact that oncoming traffic could be blundering along at 40 or doing anything up to 90mph or may be more.

The problem is not the speed limit but the people who drive above or below it!”

“I believe that average speed cameras are the practical answer, allied with police patrols being urged to prosecute drivers for lane violations. Particularly on the downwards lane.”

“I use this road on a regular basis and find nothing wrong with the speed limit , I travel in car and on motorcycle , I did a hazard perception test last year and think all drivers should be made to take one after every ten years of driving , As many seem to have forgotten the rules of the road.Twice now i have come down from top roundabout and had a car indicate right as we approached dual carriageway and take the right hand lane traveling at forty miles per hour . NO other cars where on the road its idiots like this that cause accidents , Do you under take illegal or follow idiot all the way down to bottom roundabout where they indicate left and turn into shopping area . Yes and in town cyclist are the biggest danger obey no rules at all 85% of them , no lights , dark clothing wrong side of road straight through traffic lights even when lights are on stop .and im not on about children adults setting example to younger ones .”

“Reducing the speed limit will have very little effect. Maybe they should try other traffic calming measures like speed bumps, mini roundabouts & even switchbacks...............I'm sure that would work. I use the road every day to get to work. I can't say I have seen an increase in accidents in the last 8 years but then again I don't have any facts & figures to back this up. At the end of the day no matter what the speed limit is people will drive as fast as they want. Negative thought I know but it's true & I do agree the driving standards have gotten worst over the years as cars have been produced that go faster.”

Have you only just noticed the lower driving standards and lack of respect/care given to other road users - especially by cyclists”
