MANAGER Alan Knill will now look to bolster his own defensive resources following the departure of centre-back Michael Raynes to Rotherham yesterday.

The defender is the second player to leave Glanford Park this week, following the transfer of Andy Hughes to Charlton.

With that in mind, Knill will be looking to bring in a young central defender, preferably with pace, and a left-footed left-back to add balance to his team.

Names being linked include Tom Lees from Leeds, who he had on loan at Bury last season, and Celtic's Josh Thompson after Raynes, who made 37 appearances since his arrival in January of last year, failed to find regular first team football.

"I'm delighted to be here," said Raynes upon his arrival at the Don Valley Stadium yesterday.

"This is a massive club and I know a lot of the lads here.

"When the opportunity arose for me to sign, I was over the moon.

"I have been promoted from this league in the past and I want another medal."

Raynes' departure frees up some more space in the Iron's budget.

That will provide Knill with extra ammunition in the transfer market which he will certainly want to use quickly to bring in reinforcements.
