Traders in Scunthorpe say the former Club 2000 site in the town centre should be redeveloped to help trigger a revival in that end of town.

More than a year has passed since the nightclub on Church Square was demolished – and the site is still empty.

North Lincolnshire Council plans to grass the area until the site's future is arranged. But traders say it is vital action is taken to revive the site.

Des Comerford, owner of the Fallen Hero clothes store and chairman of Keep Scunthorpe Alive, said: "I believe the area is a prime site for redevelopment and we should be doing all we can to attract developers to the area.

"At a time when the town centre is in terrible trouble, developing the site would only help the area."

Mr Comerford said he thought the area should be turned into a retail, leisure and residential site. He said: "A new entertainment site would bring a greater variety of attractions to Scunthorpe.

"If a developer is found soon, it could be the catalyst for the rebirth of the town centre."

Zahida Hanif, owner of New Image fashion store, said: "I think we need to have some nice big department stores in the market area of town as it is not very nice scenery down here and we need something to bring people to visit the shopping area.

"Instead of taking all these buildings down, new shopping areas should be invested in.

"I wish somebody would listen to us before the area becomes run down."

Since the former nightclub was flattened in 2010, the council has had "some interest" in the site from developers, but no buyers have come forward – and officials have refused to say how much interest there has been.

Officials have now revealed they will grass over the area as a temporary measure to make it look more attractive.

A spokesman for North Lincolnshire Council said: "We cannot go into details about developers that show interest in any of our sites because that information is commercially confidential. There is not a lot we can say on this at the moment other than there has been some interest."

The council views the site as part of a larger development area that includes the former leisure centre land.

The spokesman said: "While no firm decisions have been made about the future of the site, the council has previously made clear that it will be used as a prime development site.

"As a temporary measure, until a decision on its future is made, the area will be grassed over to make it look more attractive."

I did not say we have a nice centre in Scunthorpe now but that there is no point on the anyone blindly thinking that by just "making" it nicer on its own that retailers will flock here. There needs to be more incentive for them to come like people actually having money to spend.”

“When are people going to realise that retailers are reluctant to come to Scunthorpe whilst ever there is a doubt over the long term future of the main employer Tata. It does not matter how nice you make the town centre, retailers will not be willing to invest if they don't think there is going to be money for people to spend. We need to be investing in attracting other types of business to the area which will create alternative employment and increase the amount of money in peoples pockets. Then Scunthorpe will look more attractive. I know its chicken and egg scenario but at moment there are far more attractive locations for retailers to invest in.”

“Perhaps the NVQ that wrote this can come on and confirm that this is going to be grassed over, or have you got it wrong ?”

“@Godpur - "2K would have been the right size and made ideal as a venue for tribute bands, touring washed up comedians, and Clairvoyant nights.
Probably surplus to requirements though since Kirk built WE£14m"

Well said - or alternatively how about an investment in the existing Plowright theatre - more than suitable for the acts we are ending up with at a fraction of the price. Not unambitious - just realistic.

Shame that our leaders have led us here. The economic situation currently means that the whole area down there is unlikley to see any real investment for years to come. Shame, but who realistically will pump their money into that space. Would have been great for any of the suggestions made so far - but they have been circulating for years and have yet to happen. Lets revisit the town's masterplan and start over Councillors...please give us something to believe in again...:-)”

“Lack of public toilets in this area , went into town today nearest working toilet Britannia corner the others are always out of order , Will stay out of town now after been stuck in traffic at traffic lights deadwood house and pods for no reason as no cars crossed , Very bad planning this road should be left turns only , lights could be taken down and traffic flow would improve making easer access to town centre its bad planning that's killing off high street ,End of story”

“Godbur - revise your estimate upwards for the cost of the Baths. 14m was the initial figure from a few years ago.
I said at he time no building project of htat size would ever come in on budget, especially when its the council thats picking up the tab.
You can imagine how streetwise Clugston's would have been compared to the man at the council, something along the lines of " Oh, you wanted taps in the washrooms? Taht was no specified , that'll be extra then, (kerching!)"

Already the released figure is in excess of 16million and that will not be the "true cost", I still think there will be little change out of 20million after 1 year especially if we carry on booling acts at the january rate!”
