North Lincolnshire's biggest-ever rock star Iain Matthews has reformed his chart-topping Matthews Southern Comfort band and is planning a home-coming to celebrate.

Iain, who was born in Barton- Upon-Humber and educated in Scunthorpe, will stop off at the town's Plowright Theatre on November 22 as part of a UK tour.

He told What's On that the new line-up for Southern Comfort consisted of musicians from Holland, where he now lives with his family.

The new line-up features Bart Jan Baartmans, on guitar, Bart de Win, on keyboards, and Elly Kellner, on vocals.

Ian, who changed his name from Macdonald to Matthews, said: "Southern Comfort has been reborn simply because I feel I did not quite get it right the first time.

"The original band came to a shuddering and premature halt when I decided – rightly or wrongly – that it lacked musical depth.

"The formation of the new Southern Comfort comes from, a desire to finish the journey.

"I also have a deep ongoing passion to make perhaps one more important musical statement that will be both heard and acknowledged by my peers."

Getting it right or wrong the first time saw the ex-painter and decorator from Kirton in Lindsey top the UK charts for three weeks in 1970 with his cover of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock.

Woodstock was eventually ousted from the top spot by Jimi Hendrix and Voodoo Chile and Matthews Southern Comfort became a one-hit wonder.

But Iain and his band enjoyed wider success in the USA with Woodstock, Shake It and Gimme An Inch all making the Billboard top 40.

The ex-Riddings Secondary (now Melior College) student also enjoyed earlier chart success in the UK with Fairport Convention and later with Plainsong alongside Andy Roberts.

This year is proving an exciting time for Iain who as well reforming Southern Comfort has signed a jazz album deal with Verve – his first major label in 35 years.

The album is called In the Now and is released next month.

Iain said of his work: "It's a duo album with Egbert Derix. who was the leader of the Searing Quartet with whom I did my first jazz album called Joy Mining two years ago."
