Residents fight Asda expansion plan

PLANS to extend a supermarket have met with opposition from residents who say they would generate noise and disturbance.

Asda Stores Ltd has submitted an application to North Lincolnshire Council seeking permission to erect a warehouse extension and enclose an existing canopy at its store in Burringham Road, Scunthorpe.

Planning bosses at the council will meet today at Pittwood House, alongside the full planning committee, to look over the application and listen to representations from concerned residents.

Terry Green and his wife, Heather, both 63, of First Avenue, Burringham, have kept a diary that they say details the date, time and extent of disturbances from the site – many of which occur during the early hours of the morning.

Mr Green said: "Freezer lorries that come down are not supposed to have their engines running. When they are running, they are very noisy.

"Both myself and my wife are disabled and, when a lorry comes down with its engine running, we have to shut the windows and turn up the television. It has been like that all summer.

"On Tuesday, a lorry came at 1.42am and I couldn't go to sleep after it woke me up. We are not getting any sleep."

The plans include extending warehousing at the site.

The area earmarked for the expansion has Ashfield Park homes to the west, woodland to the north, residential properties to the east and The Mallard pub and Ashby Decoy golf course to the south.

At the moment, the delivery and service area at the back of the Asda store has a large canopy and the application is to enclose it and build a small extension.

According to the plans, vehicles will still be able to drive through the area and there will be roller shutter doors at each end, to ensure deliveries are made inside the building.

But residents are concerned it will add to the current noise disturbance.

John Spavin, 72, of First Avenue, said: "I don't think they should be allowed permission until they have sorted the noise out first.

"I have been complaining to Asda for 21 years. I'm the longest-living resident here.

"We get a disturbance at night and from 5.30am. It wakes you up.

"You wouldn't like a lorry keeping its engine running and trays clattering outside your bedroom window all the time.

"Asda does something about it, then you complain again the next day – I've been continually complaining for many years."

Councillor Rob Waltham, who represents the Burringham Ward, will put forward concerns at today's meeting on behalf of the residents.

He said: "I called the planning application into the committee because it affects residents who already complain about noise from Asda. It does have a big impact on those over-50s who live on that site."

Consultations with highways bosses resulted in no comments or objections.

Recommendations on the plans include the insulation of the building, to reduce noise disturbance.

Asda was unavailable to comment at the time of going to press. The planning committee meeting takes place at 2pm in the council chamber at Pittwood House, Ashby Road, Scunthorpe.

“To the self centred blind idiots that are comparing this site to a travellers site i would suggest that you actually get off your dfs sofa that the british tax payer is paying for along with your dole payments and pop down and have a look around i think you will be all pleasantly suprised the people who live there are mainly of retierment age and DESERVE some peace and quiet the site itself iver very well kept and clean and tidy and most of all the people are Very Freindly (it has the feel of a v illage where EVERYONE speaks to each other)
and when you have had a look around and realised that it is nothing like a travellers site i would suggest that you gewt on the bus and head over to the jobcentre and find something else to do during the day ie a job
your all a bunch of NIMBYS”

“Ste, The SC - Be warned that in a futile attempt to stifle the democratic right to public scrutiny, challenge and exposure of the perceived dubious and devious conduct and cunning by certain of its officials; amongst other astute tactics, NLC have resorted to implied threats couched in NLC Chief Executive speak advising "not to make further inflamatory remarks about councillor..."!!?”

by CLOSE THIS ASDA STORE &, BUILD NEW ONE OTHER SIDE OF SCUMTHORPE

    Wednesday, October 14 2009, 4:30PM

“If this had been Tesco they would have just done the extension then threatened to close it with job losses if extension not approved, that way they always win under Nu Liebore. I wish I lived near Asda instead of Tesco at Brigg. I first started shopping at Asda in Yorkshire 44 years ago and they are still the best, I lived near them at my last home and really miss them. To satisfy the moaners close the store and let them build the new store on the other side on scumthorpe or better still near Brigg to give Tesco some competition. The caravan dwellers can then buy the old Asda site for more of them but don't moan about having to travel further to shop at the best supermarket. A new big Asda north east of town centre would bring life to a dying town that needs every breath it can get.”
