Residents react to windfarm plan
PEOPLE of Bonby, Horkstow and Saxby Wold have mixed views on plans for up to 23 wind turbines on their doorsteps.
Last week, the Telegraph reported how turbines could soon be towering above the rural landscapes of Bonby, Horkstow and Saxby Wold.
-

Npower renewables, a leading UK developer and operator of onshore and offshore wind-power, plans to put up the giant structures at Saxby Wolds.
In response to the news, some residents who will be living just a mile or two away from the proposed site are worried the turbines are not an efficient way of generating power.
But some say renewable energy should be welcomed by everybody.
Rowland Alsop (64), of Main Street, Bonby, said: "Wind turbines are a white elephant – you could kit the country out with turbines and they would still only generate five per cent of energy."
Meanwhile down the road, John Addison (44), also of Main Street, has a different view.
He said: "If we all want power from renewable sources then they have got to be sited somewhere. I would sooner see them here than in a scenic place."
North Lincolnshire Council, with the help of town and parish councils, has a policy whereby it will try to prevent North Lincolnshire taking more than its fair share of windfarms in the next few years.

“Considering its usual high standards of balance, as a consequence did Radio 4 also report where on the social scale did it leave those boorish indiviuduals lacking original thought, who then insult and demean the efforts of honourable, passionate and intelligent commenters, trying to protect and enhance their local democracy, environment, quality of life and their homes. However, lets leave the final judgment on the credibility and motive of such forum comments, to far more honourable, even handed and fair minded observers.”

“Heard a talk today on Radio 4 which basically said that very bored people spout-off on comments pages all over the place in the mistaken and very naive belief that people who matter take any notice.”

“Michael/Bill - I agree, and if the NLC are serious are putting our objections to the government on this issue, we need to get together to put our case. I think maybe the 'Gordon Brown' comment should be questioned by the SET, both with regard to source and credibility.”

“North Lincolnshire Council deserves recognition and praise for its prompt openness and transparency in declaring its sensible and just stance and for laying down the Council's initial concerns and considerations for any further wind farm applications. Given that our new Council appear to be listening and acting in the wider interests of local communities and our environment; I trust that the relevant community campaign groups will act in partnership with the Council to equally lobby the Government for a need to review its policies and targets, particularly in respect of achieving a future balance between onshore and offshore wind power development. That balance for each location can only be achieved by a thorough public consultation and by cost benefit analysis.”

“Geoff, The answer to your question about paying for clean-up costs is probably nobody. You may find that the operator's liability at decommissioning is limited to removing the rotor and generator, leaving the pylon and base to moulder away. As you say the economic case for them is flawed, they are only being built because of the subsidy they attract. Dependent on wind they are unreliable and require conventional stations running all the time for when they don't generate on windless or too windy days. The environmental damage casued by access roads and bases is immense - these are HUGE things. There are safety issues that don't get publicised, rotors have spun to destruction and hit nearby houses, pylons have collapsed onto public roads. Wind power is a con that we pay for to line the pockets of land owners and power companies.”

“Don't want a wind farm, then we will build a Nuclear Power Station utilizing the Ancholme as cooling waters!”

“These wind farm projects have got to be abandoned. Their efficiency/cost ratio is very questionable and the social costs such as noise, fall in house values, etc have been pointed out in local letters in the SET. What is not often mentioned is the pollution these monsters will leave when they reach the end of their operational lives. Who will pay the cost of removing them and the massive concrete bases they rest on? They are a panic solution to try and Meet EU targets for renewables. There are others, but more importantly the government should get on with making sure we are not blacked out before the proposed nuclear stations come on stream. To do this all they need do is spend the turbine subsidies to get the coal and gas stations as 'clean' as possible. We have plenty of coal, if not gas.”
