NATIONAL Grid has already delayed the need to replace its gas pipeline under the Humber.

The company found that over time the tidal patterns of the river had eroded the riverbed covering the pipeline. That led to parts of it becoming exposed.

Engineers covered exposed areas with gravel-filled bags and placed concrete mattresses over the top.

The aim was to mimic seaweed and encour- age the settlement of sand and silt.

This novel approach ensured the pipeline could continue to operate normally.

The consultation is at a very early stage but it may be the best engineering solution to stop the new pipeline becoming exposed, is to put it in a tunnel, rather than an excavated trench. That could mean more disruption for people in and around Paull.
