SCUNTHORPE UNITED: Barnsley will provide final Iron test
SCUNTHORPE United have completed planning for their pre-season friendly line-up by adding Barnsley to the list.
Hosting the Tykes in the only game to be staged at Glanford Park prior to the start of their League One campaign, it is a relatively low key build-up to the new season.
The match, on July 30 (3pm), is the last of seven fixtures.
And it completes a run of games Knill was eager to put in place.
"He was keen to get a realistic pre-season, playing teams in and around where we are," said general manager David Beeby.
"We had a chat with one Premier League side but their fate was undecided going into the last game of the season and they were unwilling to commit to a game until they knew which division they were going to be in."
Prior to the Barnsley game, United visit Bottesford Town on July 9, before a trip to Winterton Rangers three days later.
Four days after that, Halifax is the next destination, with a short journey to Brian Little's Gainsborough Trinity on July 19.
Their fifth fixture of pre-season sees United travel to Lincoln City, on July 24, before their first encounter with league opposition on July 27 when facing Rotherham United at the Don Valley Stadium.

“A few people have double vision here with the double posts (should have gone to specsavers) ha ha,yes i know what you mean Monkey about not playing premier league teams,a manager and chairman have to know their limitations. Some teams like Knill's old team the happy shakers have arranged for Bolton,Everton and Burnley to visit them in pre-season but as you say it's just a chance for players to get fit and find some form.”

“It's not so much that they are pre-season games but we need to remember Wharton cleaned the club out of 1200 fans last season and you would have thought they would want to whet the appetite of the fans to show them that they were wrong to have a managed relegation policy over the last 18 months.
Now we have a managed stay down policy which to any real fan is apparent they are missing out on an opportunity to have a Prem club here to boost interest. The trouble is if you boost the fan numbers you boost the number of fans hungry for promotion again, something that wont happen whilst Wharton is chairman and after he has installed a puppet chairman after he "resigns".”

“Why all the stress about who we play pre season, the games are for match fitness only and mean nothing when the season starts.”

“Not a very promising start to gain promotion to CC is it. Non league local clubs a div 2 club a struggling CC club is this the best we can do for pre-season training excercise. No new signings apart form a maybe from another nonleague club Halifax. Dear oh dear looks like the board are going to be happy to stay in the lower divisons for a few seasons with no investment. Probably looking at the local unemployment and poor economy and thinking the club may as well follow suit. Bring back the 60's. UTI”
