WHILE Scunthorpe United manager Alan Knill hopes to start strengthening his strike force in the next 24 hours, there is one young forward already at Glanford Park that he is hoping for big things from next season.

He is the versatile Bobby Grant, still looking to make his mark with the Iron 12 months after his arrival from Accrington Stanley.

The Liverpool-born player, who is a friend of Anfield skipper Steven Gerrard, has only started seven league games for United so far – and is still searching for his first goal for the club.

"Bobby is a young player I was well aware of while he was at Accrington," said Knill.

"I think everyone felt it was a good move for him when he got the chance to join Scunthorpe.

"As a manager you want him to come in and set the world alight, but for whatever reason, it has not really worked out for him here yet.

"Sometimes it takes time to adjust to another club and a different level of football.

"And the Championship is a tough division for young players to make their mark in.

"The good thing for him is that he had the chance to go out on loan to Rochdale last season in League One – and scored some goal while he was there.

"The one thing you know you have with Bobby is a player with great enthusiasm and a desire to do better.

"He is also someone who can play all across the front line and that is important to a club operating with a small squad."

Bought last summer as one for the future by Nigel Adkins, Grant never really figured much for United under the next management regime of Ian Baraclough, who loaned him out to Rochdale where he scored twice in six games.

But opportunity could knock for him next season under Knill.

Grant celebrates his 21st birthday at the beginning of next month and the current United boss will be looking for the young player to come of age on the field too at League One level for Scunthorpe.
