FINANCIAL fair play will be good for English football, but not necessarily for Scunthorpe United, according to general manager David Beeby.

At the Football League’s Annual General Meeting in Cyprus, the 72 clubs have agreed ‘in principle’ to adopt UEFA’s financial fair play system where teams can only spend what they earn.

League One clubs also agreed to introduce a ‘salary cap’ from the start of the coming season where teams will only be allowed to spend a fixed proportion of their total turnover on player wages.

The system, called the Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP), currently operates in League Two at a 60 per cent threshold, and this will be reduced to 55 per cent next term.

“For a long time there has been talk about bringing in some financial regulations,” said Beeby.

“League Two has had things in place for a number of years.

“It’s something Scunthorpe United have done very well over recent years – managed finances.

“But in terms of the reputation of the Football League and English football in general, it’s a good thing.

“We’ve seen too often, clubs going into administration with huge debts.

“If we can help prevent that from happening, then that’s a good thing for English football.

“Although, I think Scunthorpe United have benefited from some clubs overstretching and finding themselves in administration with a large amount of debts.

“If you look at League One at certain times, there are some very big clubs in there.

“And if you put clubs in order of size, Scunthorpe United wouldn’t have been in the Championship.

“Clubs overspend and suffer the consequences.

“But on the whole, it’s not good for the English game.”

“Yeah, that really worked at Leeds and Luton etc - hit the fans and not those in 'control' of the finances.”

“Cyprus does seem a ridiculous place to have an AGM for English football league clubs.”

“These financial regulations for hard up clubs may be a really good idea. But why did the Leagues AGM to discuss the financial problems have to be held in 'Cyprus'. Surely the cost of flying and accomodating the many representatives of the 72 league clubs on an island in the Med could have been saved by hiring the NEC for a day with an overnight stop in the local Travelodge.”

“If you put clubs in order of size, Wigan wouldn't be in the PL - or arguably Chelsea pre Abramovich...and Newcastle would have won something in the last five decades. So what? We didnt reach the NPC by signing Div 2 donkeys, we were forced into spending money on academy players like Keogh and Sharp because our 'loan idealism' was rejected. So what - 'if' indeed deary me. This daily propaganda appears to be aimed directly at 'Mr new fan who went in the 60's and think it's swell that we even exist'..

It's well into June now - instead of pretending to be this 'well run club'that 'gloats' over skint, more successful/interesting and glamorous clubs than SUFC hows about an update on this years new kits or an open day etc.

THIS OF AURA OF SELF PITYING MALAISE MUST END NOW OR DIV 2 WILL BE OUR DESTINATION - THE TRAIN IS NOW AT THE STATION BUT WE ARE FUMBLING FOR CHANGE IN THE WAITING ROOM.

    UP THE IRON!”
