SCUNTHORPE United manager Alan Knill has had a couple of setbacks in the summer transfer market.

But he is still hopeful of making his first signings of the summer by the beginning of next week.

The fact a couple of medicals are already pencilled in is an indication of how close he feels he is to success.

"It is very frustrating, but that's the nature of the job," confessed Knill, who wants to bring in five or six new faces ready for the start of the Iron's return to League One.

"We have put a couple of deals to people and we think it is going to be positive.

"One has agreed the figures we have put to him and the other is still ongoing.

"But nothing is ever certain until a contract has been signed – and that has not happened yet.

"The players we are talking to are free agents, one is a forward and the other is a wide player."

The Scunthorpe boss is hoping to get his first bit of transfer business completed before he goes on his own family holiday later next week.

One player he has been linked with is midfielder Nicky Law, from his former club Rotherham United.

The 23-year-old is out of contract this summer – but is also believed to be a target for League Two newcomers Crawley.

"Nicky Law is a player I am well aware of, but as far as I know he is still at Rotherham," was all Knill would say.

Rotherham front man Ryan Taylor is also thought to be a possible target for Scunthorpe.

Knill had hoped to have already made some definite transfer progress – but he refuses to pay over the odds to bring players to Glanford Park.

"We have missed out on a couple of our targets," he confessed.

"Mostly it has been to do with money, that is why they have not come.

"We could have paid over the odds to have brought them here, but value for money is something that is very important to me.

"Both players have signed instead for League Two clubs.

"That to me shows they did not have the hunger to try to move their careers on here with us in League One.

"But we have plenty of other options who we are looking at."

“I'm guessing that the players Alan was after were none other than Dean Smalley who went to Oxford United from Oldham Athletic and had been on loan at Chesterfield. The other player i'm presuming was Joel Grant who went from Crewe Alexander to Aldershot.Yes clearly both players lack ambition especially Smalley who had just been part of a promotion winning team.”
