JORDAN Robertson admits he will never forget his part in the fatal accident on the M1 motorway near Leicester on Christmas Day 2008.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of causing the death of a father of five by dangerous driving.

Then, he was a young Sheffield United player on loan to Southampton who looked to have a bright career ahead of him.

And now after serving 16 months of his prison sentence, he wants to start focusing on his football again.

"When something like that happens you never move on really," he confessed.

"What has happened in the past has had a massive effect on a lot of people's lives.

"When something like that happens it can either make you or break you – but I have always tried to stay positive and I think it has made me stronger as a person.

"I feel I have strong people around me and a great support network of friends and family.

"Now what I want to do is play football again.

"I have that hunger and desire inside me, and that willingness to prove a point."

And Robertson is delighted to get the chance to work again with Alan Knill after a brief loan spell at Bury less than two years ago.

"I really wanted to work with him again," said Robertson.

“I have had a brief spell with him before. I know the training that he does and the type of football that he wants to play.

“I spoke to him towards the end of last season and again during the summer.

“And now I have an opportunity to rebuild my career again here.

“I know that I can get back to where I was two years ago.

“But my main aim is to come and play as many games as possible for Scunthorpe and score as many goals as possible.

“When you look at other strikers who have been here, and see what they have achieved, it just makes me want to come and do the same thing.”

Robertson, who has spent time on loan at Torquay, Northampton, Dundee United, Oldham and Hungarian side Ferencvaros as well as the Saints and Bury, added: “I do not look at this as a stepping stone – I want to prove to people what I can do.

“I want to be an honest centre forward who does well for the team and scores a few goals.

“I know Scunthorpe have been a bit of a yo-yo team in the last few seasons. But it’s in my mind that we can go straight back up.”

“Take a look at the court report.

Just quilty of looking at his MP3 player? They estimated he was doing 114mph didnt they and that he would have had 10 seconds to see the car he ploughed into. I am the thickest of the the thick but even for me it wouldnt take 10 seconds to change a track with or without driving at those sorts of speeds.

But he (unlike you guys) knows all this use google in future before typing half baked comments.

I wish him luck I really do.”

“I personally think this article is in very bad taste and the whole story does not warranty any place in the telegraph. I have to agree with Mr Bufferdude the sentence was not long enough as I am sure it was more than looking at the MP3 player, that in my mind does not constutue dangerous driving more due care and attention. In which case charge would be causing death by careless driving. I am all for people getting a second chance but I feel for the victims and their family in this circumstance, at least Jordan has a life to get on with. He should do it quietly and out of respect for what he has done not paster himself and his story all over the telegraph. Get on with your career gracefully and quietly.”

“I would add that if you look at the basics of it, all he is guilty of is looking at his MP3 player whilst driving. I have done this myself a few times briefly (I know I shouldn't and after reading this I won't) and the only different between myself and him is that his happened to cause an accident, which is all it was an accident. Prison sentences, especially long ones are for the people that are a danger to others and society and I don't believe Jordan is one of those people, although admittedly I have never met the guy.
On the football side I really hope he has a long and successful career at Scunthorpe, as long as he commits himself and really puts his balls (sorry for the pun) into it I am sure he will come out on top.”

“I n answer to Mr Bufferdude,in a LOT of instances long prison sentences serve little purpose, yes there has to be punishment but in many instances it is a LIFE sentence just remembering what has been done.I feel sure Jordon is full of remorse but also wish him well in the future.”

“What about the poor victim's family? never mind your reflections on becoming stronger by this experience Jordan.Who cares what impact it has had on you?.Prison life is a cushy number these days and from my point of view you should have been made to serve longer. As for the football side of things i wish you all the best Ak will try and work miracles with you.”

“But it's in my mind that we can go straight back up" - it is unfortunate that the present chairman won't allow that but just entertain us next season and bang a few goals in and sign a contract extension when you get to 20 or so.

However make sure you don't get to that point in January or Wharton will be selling you on just in case we look like there is a slim chance of promotion. If you wanted to come to an ambitious club then you chose the wrong one. If you chose it as a stepping stone then you have chosen the right one if you keep your wage demand at YTS level.”
