ACTING Scunthorpe United skipper Sam Togwell is no stranger to the current managerial uncertainty at Glanford Park.

He has experienced the sacking of a manager twice before – one as a youngster at Crystal Palace and again after he had just joined Barnsley.

"Unfortunately it is something that does happen in football that a manager loses his job," the 26-year-old declared.

"It was disappointing to see him (Ian Baraclough) go. He had been here since I first joined the club and been part of the promotion success at Wembley.

"When a manager goes, it causes uncertainty for everyone connected to the club, but especially the players.

"They won't know whether the new man coming in, whoever he is, will like them or not."

Togwell suffered his first managerial upheaval when he was still a youngster at Selhurst Park and Trevor Francis got the sack.

There followed three short-term appointments within the space of five months before Iain Dowie was finally installed.

His second managerial loss came a little over four months after moving to Barnsley when Andy Ritchie, the man who had signed him, was dismissed.

Fortunately Togwell's face fitted with new boss Simon Davey – and he knows the Scunthorpe squad now have to work to prove themselves when a new manager is appointed at Glanford Park.

"We have just got to keep our heads up and keeping working hard," he insisted.

"Whoever does come in will inherit an honest group of players who are willing to work hard for each other."

Togwell also insists the new manager will take charge of a squad that still believes it can stay up.

"We are not a squad that is feeling sorry for ourselves at the moment, that is the last thing on our minds," he continued.

"As a group of players we believe we are good enough to stay in this league – and we have got to go out there and prove that.

"There are still plenty of points to be played for and we will be fighting for them.

"We have beaten some top teams here at Glanford Park this season and there is no reason why we can't do it again.

"We have also still got that vital away game at Crystal Palace to play.

"Nothing is set in stone in this league."

Togwell hopes the introduction of a new manager might just give United the extra impetus they need.

"When a new manager comes it can be a good thing and does often lift a team," he said. "Hopefully that can happen here for us."

Togwell hopes to be back in action when the Iron return from the current international break at Norwich on Saturday.

He is fit again now from his hamstring worries.

"Most of our injured players are getting back fit again now so that creates plenty of competition for places for whoever takes over," he added.
