Secretary Eddy Altoft says everybody connected with Scunthorpe Centurions is itching for the start of what the boxing club hope will be another successful season.

The club's first show of the new campaign, their 43rd year, is scheduled for Saturday, September 22, at Riddings Sports Hall, from 7pm, when it is hoped as many of what he feels is an exciting crop of youngsters can add another win to their cards.

"I'm looking forward to it this year," said Altoft.

"We've worked hard to get where we are.

"We've got a nice venue at Riddings Sports Hall, where we hold our shows, and I've got some good lads at the moment, four or five coming through with a lot of potential.

"Two of them are county champions from last year, like Matty Harness – who can't wait for the start of the season. I expect great things of him because he's so keen.

"Shane Smith (15) has been with me since he had his first schools' bout when he was 10. He's now had 15 fights.

"He's one of the hardest workers in the club – if he gets beat, he comes back the next night because he wants to go again and again. I can't hold him back.

"Now he's gone through his probation period, he's progressing. He's starting to show really good promise.

"Chris Farrow is a very strong lad who, what he lacks in ability, he makes up for in courage. He's got the heart of a lion.

"Then there's Luke Fisher (17), who's a very talented fighter. He's had some bad decisions in the past, but he's had 20 fights and won more than he's lost. I expect a lot from him this year in the junior championships. I think he can go a long way."

As well as that talented trio, big things are expected for 16 year olds Cameron Macleod and Sam Smith, and Damien Siwak, 15, who has won three fights on the spin after losing his first.

But to get to the top and establish themselves as fine amateur fighters, hard work is required.

Altoft says such qualities are found in abundance at Centurions' Riddings Sports Hall base.

"These lads have been with us a couple of years now and are starting to come through," he added.

"They work hard, believe me. Boxing training is one of the hardest in the world.

"People like Luke Campbell, who won gold at the Olympics, know how hard they've had to work to get where he is.

"I admire them all. I see the work they put in when they come to the club.

"They want it badly, people like Matty Harness and Luke Fisher.

"I don't have to tell them what to do, they come and work out. Then the coaches teach them techniques and pad work.

"A lot of other lads come as well, but how long it will take them to become boxers is up to them."

Scunthorpe Centurions ABC meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between 6.30-8pm at Riddings Sports Hall.
