THE Government has urged rail officials to end train delays in the Scunthorpe area caused by a landslide in Hatfield as soon as possible.

Rail Minister Norman Baker said train operators were working hard to tackle the problems caused by the landslide near Hatfield Colliery on Tuesday, February 12.

But although he accepted Network Rail’s argument that work to repair the lines affecting journeys between Scunthorpe and Doncaster could not begin until the landslide stopped moving, he said it was essential that the situation was resolved quickly.

“I have been receiving regular updates from Network Rail and the train operators who are working hard to repair what is an extremely complex engineering task,” he said.

“As soon as the ground stops moving and the colliery has completed its stabilisation works, Network Rail will commence repairs to the track and I am advised that repairs may take 8 weeks to complete, but Network Rail are hopeful they will be able to finish the work before then.

“In the meantime both direct and stopping bus replacement services are in operation between Scunthorpe and Doncaster and between Doncaster and Goole. Northern Rail train services between Sheffield, Doncaster, Hull and Bridlington are being diverted via Selby. I would encourage passengers to access the FTPE and Northern websites for updates.

“I will continue to urge Network Rail to complete the work as soon as possible and end the disruption to people’s journeys.”

“Typical useless statement from a politician trying to keep his name in the news, as always”
