Scunthorpe Matalan store waits to see what effect clearance store closing will have on trade
A Scunthorpe Matalan store is waiting to see what effect its clearance store closing down will have on trade.
The Matalan clearance store on Dudley Road, Scunthorpe, closed its doors for the final time yesterday (Friday, January 25).
It reported a very successful final day of trading, after prices were slashed to £1 or under on all items.
The chain's other Scunthorpe store, on the Skippingdale Retail Park, will continue to trade as normal.

A Scunthorpe business has said this shows there is a change on the high street.
Robert Nilsson, joint director of Direct Carpets in Scunthorpe, said: "I think there is a definite change in shift on the high street.
"People are looking for bargains and they would be prepared to rush out to go get these last minute bargains.
"People are definitely changing the way they are shopping.
"One of the biggest problems for the town centre is that the council is not doing anything to encourage people to come shopping in the town.
"By doing that, they are not getting footfall and big name retailers are going out of town."
A spokesman for Matalan on Skippingdale said: "It is too early to tell what effect the clearance store closing down will have on our trade."

“In the opinion of some your comment is the best one seen by far for a long time. Well written, to the point and most probably factually correct. It is nice to see that some people refuse to be dumbed down.”

“How about this for a better wording of the story.
Matalan's temporary clearance store on Dudley Road has now reached the end of its leasehold and so will now be closing.
When Matalan relocated to Skippingdale over a year ago, the company was still tied into a contract to pay rent on the old store until the end of this month. So, rather than close it down while still having to pay rent on it, they kept it trading for this time as a temporary clearance store. That time has now come to an end, and so the store is closing.
The next tenant for the store has already been found, as previously reported in this newspaper, and Go Outdoors Leisure and Camping Superstore will be moving in in the coming months creating extra jobs.
Well I think that was much better worded and contained more 'news'. Honestly the standard of reporting in the Telegraph is getting worse. The story is making out that they have 'chosen' to close the clearance store - when the fact is that it was intended to be a temporary store while the lease expired. The story fails to mention this, nor does it mention that new tenants have already been found.”

“I just love showing these inane comments to my Chinese class! It demonstrates why China has to keep firm control of the internet! These trolls and their like rob the internet of any true integrity.
There are quite a number on here not just these two, there are too many to mention! Small minds, small people. I actually understood the article!
Dalian, China.”

“What a completely pointless news article. I mean, what effect do you expect a closing down sale to have! It's closing, so what does it matter.
Good god, is this the best that this pointless paper can come up with? It's cold outside so we'll just make up a few stupid articles to post on our useless newspaper web site.”

“Not content with boring us with the weather you have to repeat a story that appeared only yesterday written by someone else. It is a good job I'm not your boss - you would be unemployed.”
