After seeing the new year get off to a positive start with a win at Hartlepool, CHRIS SUMPTER spoke at length with Iron chairman Steve Wharton.

Here is their conversation, as published in this week's Scunthorpe Telegraph, on 2011, manager Alan Knill's position and to what extent they'll look to strengthen during the January transfer window.

Q 2011 was a difficult year for the club wasn't it?

A It was a very difficult year.

When you look back and you think we lost Nigel (Adkins), it was a daunting task for a new young manager to take over.

The year before we only

escaped by the skin of our teeth, so one has to realise

just how difficult it is for a small club to survive in the Championship.

Q You said at the time it was a mistake putting Ian Baraclough in charge, if you had that chance again, would you have  appointed someone with more experience at that time?

A Obviously everyone is wiser with hindsight.

We'd known for some time we were likely to lose Nigel, not because it was imminent, but bearing in mind that if a manger is successful you're going to lose him, if he's unsuccessful, they usually get the sack.

If you're at a small club, you'd never say you'd reached the pinnacle of your career.

We thought we were doing right, planning for the future and I think, given different circumstances and again with the benefit of hindsight, we might have been able to guide Ian a little bit better.

It's a big thing to be dropped in at the deep end and expect to survive at that level.

Q With Alan Knill coming in, this was always going to be a transitional time for the club but how has the season compared with what you as a board were expecting?

A I think it's not gone as well as we'd have hoped, but I can give you one or two good reasons why.

One is we've had an enormous amount of injuries and when you think about the players that Alan has brought in, if you added up all the games they've played, it's not many.

Andy Barcham had a long spell out, Damien Mozika has hardly played any games for us, Jordan Robertson has been out most of the season and Nicky Ajose just hasn't been anything like the player he was when he was on loan at Bury last year.

All that has conspired against us and it was always going to be difficult to begin with because, for a side coming down, it's very, very difficult to get momentum going in the opposite direction.

Quite a lot of the players, if not all of them, were on a drop in salary, which hurts a player to start with, so you've got to get over that hurdle.

There's an awful lot against you. That's why so many clubs, when they start to slide, find it difficult to stop.

The other thing is, it's a bigger drop financially than it's ever been before.

When we came down last time, there wasn't the solidarity money from the Premier League. So this year, instead of being a £2million drop, it's a £4million drop.

That's an awful lot of money to take out of your budget. You can't do that in one year.

If we hadn't got a strong balance sheet, it would bankrupt us.

Q We may only be halfway through the season, but do the board feel Scunthorpe are too close to the bottom four for comfort. Isn't the last thing the club really needs is to be involved in another relegation battle?

A If you don't mind me saying, that's stating the obvious.

Q I'm looking for your opinion on that though. Do you agree with that statement?

A Yes. We don't want to be near the bottom, obviously.

But hopefully the win at Hartlepool will see us kick on.

I'm sure it won't be all smooth sailing from now on, but hopefully we'll keep clear of the bottom area.

As the pressure mounts, for whatever reason, I know you will say players shouldn't lose confidence, but it happens.

You can see, when they're at home and you can hear a pin drop, they're that little bit too nervous.

You can't help that. The only thing to cure it is if you get some wins under your belt.

Q Alan Knill has admitted that while all managers are always under pressure, there have been points where he has feared for his position at the club. Speaking from the board's perspective, has he had any need to do that?

A I don't even want to discuss that with you.

Every time a manager has a few bad results, he's asked about whether he's under pressure and if he fears for his job.

Most times people say no and the board give him a vote of confidence, which is like a kiss of death.

I would say, judge us on our record and we haven't employed many managers during the period I've been involved at the club.

We've only dismissed one manager and that was very, very reluctantly.

We're not likely, I wouldn't have thought, to act on impulse.

Alan took on a big job and the things we liked about him when he took over, we still like about him now.

We believe he's the sort of manager to get a team that will represent Scunthorpe well and be one we can support.

It's been a difficult run and bad run, but the important thing is to help each other get through the difficult times.

Q Will you be allowing the manager to spend some money and bring in new players during the January transfer window?

A We haven't got any money.

For us to bring players in, we have to get some players out.

The only exception, as I've always said, is that we'll do our utmost to find extra money if we can find what I would term 'investment players'.

They are young players who we believe have a good chance of developing at Scunthorpe and will help us improve, while at the same time could turn what we spend on them into a profit.

Q So aside from that exception, you need to move players on before the club will spend any money?

A We'll find money from somewhere if we can find investment players and if we can get one out and one in to improve the side. That makes sense.

Q With regards to players who don't feature as part of the manager's plans, is there any chance of severance deals to free up funds? Is that an option?

A What certainly isn't an option is discussing those matters with the press.

Q I wasn't asking about individual players, just a general comment on whether it's something you'd consider?

A No, I wouldn't want to even talk about the subject. That is a commercial decision which is entirely between the board and anyone we may discuss it with.

Q In your annual report you touched on the fact you thought 'money spent in January is rarely money well spent'. Have your

fingers been burned by what happened last January?

A Not really, because I have never thought spending money in January was money well spent.

You might pick me up on that and say 'why did you do so and so', but of course there are exceptions to every case.

Generally speaking, money spent in January, is panic spending and clubs always put prices up.

With hindsight, we wouldn't have spent the money we did last January.

Q Hindsight is a powerful tool, isn't it.

A Yes, but I knew in my heart at the time it was wrong, but you bend over backwards to support your manager.

Q Finally, do you appreciate the supporters' frustrations with the way the season has unfolded? What can you say to get them behind the club?

A I don't like fans to turn on the team, but they pay their money and do what they want to do.

For a lot of them, venting their anger is a way of letting off steam.

I love to see them elated with joy, so we'll do our best to get a winning team.

The problem is that everybody else is trying to do the same thing, so it's not going to be an easy battle.
