Mike White (‏@mikewhitesport) Tweeted it was "one of the most baffling decisions you'll see."

Matt Barnsley (‏@MrKingBarns) : "Nigel Adkins. 2 straight promotions. Had just come from two goals down at the bridge on Wednesday evening. Football is wrong!"

Alan Biggs (‏@AlanBiggs1): "Waste of time trying to find any rational reason for Adkins sacking. You can't make sense of madness."

Kelly McCann ‏(@KellyMcCann81): "Can't believe Nigel gone at Southampton nicest man in football & not only that but look where #saints are ? Lucky club that snaps him up!"

Ian Penrose ‏(@ian_penrose): "Adkins is a great manager and wont be out of work long! His record speaks for itself!"

Football Follow Back (‏@FootyFollowing) : "Nigel Adkins has been sacked by Southampton and replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, retweet if you think it's a bad decision."

Matt Le Tissier - the former Southampton goalscoring legend (‏@mattletiss7): "Best wishes to nigel adkins, im sure if he so wishes he'll get another job very soon, thanks nige."

By 1pm today, so many people were commenting about Nigel Adkins that he was declared to the Trending in the UK.

Mauricio Pochettino will take over as the new manager at Southampton, Nigel Adkins having joined the Saints in September 2010 on a three-year deal.

“Nigel will not be out of work for long after all his good work at southampton. cortese has really made a pathetic decision to sack him, and i am sure southampton will now go into freefall as a club.Football needs a reality check and the prem league with thier hundreds of million is ruining the game in this country, not enough money filtering down the leagues and to many overpaid primadonnas ,foriegn mersoneries, and big clubs out of touch with the average working man.Good luck nigel you will always be a sufc legend, its just a pity our chairman did not show the slightest bit of ambition when you was here."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“Agree with you Brianpotter4, I too adopted Saints as my Premier Lge team and were cheering them on, now I hope they fall over bigtime! I will also follow the team that NA manages.
Being that he has been paid out, MAYBE, as a favour, he can make his way back to Scunny to lend a helping hand for nix???? Just for OLD TIMES SAKE....please Nige!!!!”

“Now that NA is available, there will be a lot of club chairmen sharpening their knives, axes or whatever they normally use to plunge into their manager's backs.

NA must have fallen out with the Chairman.

Newcastle? Chelsea ? West Ham at the end of the season (Big Sam out of contract then and its not getting renewed cos the fans don't like his style). Villa ? or ANY championship club.”

“Had a huge soft spot for Southampton ever since Adkins took the job, this is a shocking decision by the club and i hope it backfires on them and they are relegated! Back to back promotions and they have had some hard luck so far in the prem, and some cracking results too.

Nigel Adkins is a top bloke and great manager, I will continue to follow his managerial career and adopt whatever side is lucky enough to have him at the helm as my second club!

If you haven't seen this yet have a look!

“Anyone can refer to extremes. Our chairman got criticism for other reasons. Our chairman was firmly at the other end of the spectrum when it came to management hiring.”

“Much anger has been directed at our Chairman and directors on this site. Whatever they may have done or not done to warrant the criticism, I am sure they would never have acted in the reprehensible fashion just exhibited by the Southampton chairman. Is he trying to make Abramovich look like a pussycat?
Nigel saved them from oblivion and was just beginning to establish them in the Premier League.
They deserve to go back into the Championship.
Chris Huton was treated equally shabbily by Newcastle but of course had no shortage of offers from other clubs.
Nigel's reputation is fully intact and he will soon have another job but it won't be in Scunthorpe.”

“Top bloke, has his own managerial ideas and usually gets decent results from them.

The trouble with Prem football is that club owners like a yes man, and Adkins isn't one of those

*think of Clough all those years ago*”
