SCUNTHORPE United are expected to sign a centre-back in time for the trip to Leeds United on Saturday.

Manager Ian Baraclough has been chasing a number of targets, with Colchester United defender Paul Reid a player being linked with United by sources in East Anglia.

The 28-year-old Cumbrian played most of his football at Barnsley, between 2004 and 2008, making over 100 appearances for the Tykes, before a switch to League One Colchester.

He was a target for the Iron when he moved to the U's and United's interest has clearly remained.

Scunthorpe have a number of defensive worries, Rob Jones and Cliff Byrne struggling with injury, while Niall Canavan continues to be ruled out.

David Mirfin has not trained this week but expects to be fit for the visit to Elland Road.

United are also reported to be closely monitoring Cambridge winger Robbie Willmott, along with Brighton and Stevenage.

Willmott (20) has come through the youth ranks at the Blue Square Premier League club, where he is top of the goalscoring and assists chart this term.

“the problem stems from the keeper,he has lost his confidence and has no agility whatsoever resulting in the defence also not having confidence in him, get rid!! how are all our players injured when they have just had a month off?? BARRA, its b&n forwards we need, what dont you understand about that?? if you fell in a bucket of busoms you would come out sucking your thumb!!!!”

“Our squad is sadly looking as depleted as it did in the relegation year, so any addition is welcome (especially when a certain big-money signing is beginning to look a bit 'soft') - it is essential in The Championship to have some facility for squad rotation, and unfortunately Barra has not had that luxury this season, like Adkins did last season. Although Nolan has been an excellent replacement for Marcus Williams, I'm afraid Collins has not filled McGann's boots, and the jury remains out as to whether Daggers is a suitable replacement for Hayes - he would appear to need a more reliable strike partner than Forte, so the focus in January has to be for a striker. It's a pity that Bobby Grant hasn't been given a consistent chance - maybe he's not ready yet, but we paid a lot of money for him by Iron standards. I hope Barra can find someone from the lower leagues capable of scoring a dozen goals who is prepared to come to North Lincolnshire. It's a shame that the Hooper money will probably be paying for seats rather than players - if that's the case they ought to rename the donny road end after him. I hope the boss keeps his head and picks his games like Nigel did last season - I fear that asking for 110% every game from such a small squad of players will result in relegation, as they are already beginning to look jaded.”

“Agree with PH - we need more than just *one* striker. And at least this way we can aim to draw every game 0-0. How's that for positivity, eh?”

“Of course we desperately need a striker. In my opinion we need two plus a hard man in midfield. But anyone who thinks we don't also need a centre back has been watching different games to me. It's a shambles back there.”

“We don,t need another league one centreback,we need a striker who is capable of putting chances away, why dont we put a proper bid in for our targets? "UP THE IRON"!!!”
