STRIKER Akpo Sodje has joined Scunthorpe United on a deal until the end of the season.

The experienced 32-year-old has been a free agent since leaving the Iron's League One rivals Preston North End before Christmas.

Akpo Sodje will stay with Scunthorpe United until the end of the season.

Sodje, who is Scunthorpe's first signing of the January transfer window, had been on a month-to-month contract at Deepdale and quit the Lilywhites to try to secure a longer-term stay elsewhere.

He has scored seven goals in 17 appearances this season and previously played for Iron boss Brian Laws at Sheffield Wednesday.

Scunthorpe are the 15th club of the journeyman's career, which has also included spells in Scotland, with Hibernian, and Chinese club Tianjin Teda, who he left in the summer to return to England.

At 6ft 2ins, Sodje will bring height and strength to the Iron front line, which has lacked a physical presence since Leon Clarke returned to Charlton Athletic in early December.

The arrival of the Nigerian, who will wear the number nine shirt for United, almost certainly means United have decided against extending the loan of Ipswich Town's Nathan Ellington.

“generally, three into two doesnt go, but me id play all three strikers sorry grella but you have been found wanting. lets bully defences, it could work, though my own gut feeling is ellington will be on his way, shame because given game time "match fitness" he will come good.”

“Looks like he could be a Clarke/Parkin hybrid. That will do for me!
If he can keep the 7 in17 ratio going, it should turn our season around.
Laws should know exactly how to integrate him into our squad without much trial and error.
Good luck mate, we really need you to perform.”

“Oh yeah happy with this bit of news, nice to see us signing someone who is still doing it rather than someone who used to as the goals tally for the first half of the season will testify.

As I recall we were after Sodje in our first season in the Championship for some much-needed forward line strength. He ended up at Wednesday and did really well until a bad knee injury slowed his progress, but everytime I've seen him he's been a handful (and not just like the old-fashioned Brian Laws strikers who were in the team just because they're 6ft and 17 stone ala Gayle/Torpey!!!)

    Up The Iron!!!”
