Scunthorpe United skipper Paul Reid will be back in full training today.

The United defender has been working on strengthening his grip after the metal plates which were implanted to correct a broken bone in his right hand were removed.

He has now been given the all-clear to step up his return.

Although welcoming Reid's return, manager Alan Knill has praised the performances of Niall Canavan, who has enjoyed a run at the heart of the Iron defence.

"He's done well, now he just needs to continue that consistency," said the Scunthorpe boss.

"Consistency, especially at centre-half, is what we all look for. We don't look for 10 out of 10, we just look for seven or eight each week.

"That's what Niall needs to do now, continue with that and we're all sure he's got the right things to have a career.

"We look at the stats and he's doing well in them – he's winning headers and being more dominant.

"We're all delighted because we know there's a player in there. But only Niall can bring it out, and he needs to bring it out every week."

“Thought you played the game with your head and feet, not sure how improving your grip can stop you playing - unless of course he is going to replace Slocombe or take a few of the under performers by the throat and give them a good shaking”

“He's been coming back since August - see this - http://tinyurl.com/96f799e

By all accounts he is still 6 weeks off being able to play. Why do we get this spin when they know the truth?”

“Why don't you come out and tell what you are hinting at DFlated, it's like reading cryptic postings, what a waste of space putting rubbish like your thread.”

“He will not be playing until November - calm down. Also another demoralising pop at one of our players. It's a disgrace and how you dare print such a dig is an equal disgrace. No mention of Mozika then !!!! If only you lot knew.”
