Scunthorpe United could see the risk of relegation recede by one clear step if lowly Portsmouth were to be expelled from the Football League.

It is being suggested that might happen unless the Pompey Supporters' Trust buys the famous old club and takes it out of administration by the end of this season.

That could mean one fewer team than normal facing relegation from League One.

However, the Portsmouth Supporters' Trust is said to be confident of saving the club.

Scunthorpe United are currently one place above the drop zone - with Oldham, Bury, Portsmouth and Hartlepool below them. Normally, the bottom four would go down.

The Iron beat Portsmouth 2-1 last Tuesday night at Glanford Park.
