Scunthorpe Utd: Battle to avoid bottom four widens on a day of surprise wins

Scunthorpe United manager Alan Knill believes more and more clubs are on the verge of being sucked into the League One relegation battle.

Six of the third tier's bottom seven all won on Saturday, including the Iron, courtesy of a 3-1 scoreline at Leyton Orient.

The only exception were Wycombe Wanderers, who were beaten 2-0 in a proverbial six-pointer at Walsall and dropped to the foot of the table as a result.

At first glance, those results are frustrating for Scunthorpe, who had been hoping back-to-back wins would put a decent amount of breathing space between themselves and the drop zone.

But with the 15th placed O's now only seven points ahead of United, who have at least one game in hand on several clubs just above them, they and the likes of Tranmere Rovers and Oldham Athletic are beginning to get sucked back into the fight to stay clear of the bottom four.

"Usually you find in the last three months of the season a lot of the bottom teams win and the sides above lose," Knill, whose side can move up to 17th place with a win at home to Walsall tomorrow night, told the Telegraph.

"There'll be someone that comes down that hasn't been in and around the bottom four.

"But all we have to do is look after ourselves and not worry what other results are. We have to make sure we're picking up results.

"Last week was a great week for us, now we have to make this coming week a great week for us.

"We want maximum points from two home games.

"We had some great support on Saturday from everybody that came down and I'm delighted we could send them home happy. We want to do that every week."

Amazingly, only two of their starting line-up at Brisbane Road were in the first XI when the Iron drew 1-1 with Chesterfield on New Year's Eve.

Since then, they have signed the likes of Josh Walker and Jon Parkin, both of whom scored in Saturday's 3-1 success, and are reaping the rewards.

"I think it's a new-look side, with competition for places," added Knill.

"Barch (Andy Barcham) comes on and scores and I've got the likes of Jordan (Robertson), who was excellent before he got injured, and our leading goalscorer (Bobby Grant) on the bench.

"That's massive. It's the first time we've had it and I hope we can keep it until the end of the season."
