CLUB skipper Cliff Byrne was the only player missing from action when Scunthorpe United's squad returned to Glanford Park for the start of pre-season training today.

The 29-year-old defender is still recovering from summer surgery to repair a trapped nerve in his back.

It is an injury that has dogged him from virtually the start of the year – and will keep him out of action until September.

"It's disappointing for Cliff and disappointing for us," said manager Alan Knill.

"He has been a big player for this club and I am sure he will be again.

"But he will miss all of our pre-season work and we are told by the doctors that it will be September before he will be ready to play again."

United's three summer signings – Jordan Robertson, Andy Barcham and Jimmy Ryan – joined their new team-mates for the first time today.

Knill will expect all the squad to return in good shape, having each been handed individual fitness schedules to follow throughout the summer.

"Michael O'Connor has been in at the club most days during the last week working in the gym," said the United boss.

"Garry Thompson too has been coming in over the summer and looks in good shape."

Thompson, who missed nearly all last season with a groin problem, will have specialist advice to monitor his training and fitness to try to keep him on the pitch this coming campaign.

Knill has promised the players plenty of ball work during pre-season.

But today it was all about stamina as the United boss put his squad through their paces in Laughton Woods.
