Niall Canavan hailed Scunthorpe United's defensive display at AFC Wimbledon, but admitted their attacking instincts will have to improve if they are to progress to the second round of the FA Cup.

The Iron centre-back, playing his first game since August, helped his side to a goal-less draw on Saturday, setting up a replay at Glanford Park on Tuesday week.

And while Canavan was delighted with a clean-sheet, he believes the hosts should not have been left feeling the same.

"From a personal point of view, with the defensive side, I'm happy, but there's always room for improvement and as a team we need to be putting more goals in," said the 20-year-old.

"I'm pleased with the clean-sheet, as a defender that's all you can really look to do.

"I was speaking to Sam Slocombe and he said he had one save to make.

"Defensively I think we did well, we did as much as we can do in shutting them out. But I think looking back at it we probably should have scored a few.

"No disrespect to them, but I feel we've got the quality to put a few past them.

"We're disappointed in that fact, but it is a difficult place to come.

"The second half it was getting fairly scrappy and the game became quite stretched, we weren't keeping the ball as well as we should.

"But I think if you look at the number of shots we had, it might tell you that we probably should have edged it.

"It's something we've got to go back to and something we learn from.

"Hopefully we'll come back better from this."

Nevertheless, coming on the back of a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth, Canavan wants the Iron to use the result as the starting point for another unbeaten run.

"It is momentum to a certain extent, we've got back on an unbeaten run and hopefully it stays for as long as possible," he said.

"It's a boost that we kept a clean sheet but at the same time we know we've got to do better when we get the chances.

"The replay will be another chance for us to show what we can do.

"We just take every game as it comes and if you end up going to a replay, you end up going to a replay. It's just one of those things.

"It adds to the fixtures but it's nothing we can't cope with."
