A third clean-sheet of the League One season can go some way to boosting Scunthorpe United's confidence, according to defender Eddie Nolan.

The Iron were held to a goal-less draw at Exeter City on Saturday with both sides going close to breaking the deadlock on several occasions – including a chance for the Grecians' Jake Taylor, who hit the bar in the final minute.

Nolan believes the result proves United have the potential to string a run of good results together as they look to push away from the wrong end of the table over the festive period.

"It's always nice to keep a clean-sheet, whether you're doing well or not," said the left-back.

"I think we're all happy as a team.

"The last few weeks we've had a few bad results. We've been playing well in most of them but you have to take the positives out of them.

"We know we're good enough, we just need to get the results.

"It could have gone both ways in the end on Saturday. They had chances and we had chances, but we'll take the positives.

"We kept a clean-sheet, so we're happy with that.

"We did okay in the first half but were a lot better in the second half.

"We stuck together, worked as a team and nearly got the win at the end.

"But we need to kick on from here, starting at home on Boxing Day against Bury.

"It would be great to get a win in the next game, especially at home. We haven't won for a while, so we'll be looking to do that.

"It would be nice to get a win for the fans at Christmas.

"They were brilliant on Saturday. I have to say well done to them. They stuck with us and gave us good support.

"We didn't lose, got a point and a clean-sheet so we have to take the positives.

"We know we're a good team, we know we've got good players, we just needed to get out of that rough patch and get back to the way we know we can play.

"It helps start building momentum. We can build on this now."

“Time for SUFC players to do thier talking on the pitch, get points on the board and avoid relegation.Time for some of the non triers and wage thiefs to give our supporters some christmas cheer for a change, and can our chairman make the effort to let the fans know if anybody with ambition and investment has been lined up to replace him."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“I have to correct you there sir. This is far more positive than the last positive we were sold - a 3-2 loss!”

“It aggrieves me (and many other fans) that we take comfort in the fact we kept a clean sheet against poorly performing opposition. There is no boost, the alarm bells are still ringing out loud. Fine, we failed to concede but we also, more importantly failed to score.

Despite what is says above there are no positives and nor should any fan think that there is. We still need to ship out 4-5 players, the disruptors and non triers and we need someone who knows where the back of the net is. There is time to turn this season around but it will need input from the top, of which we have no chance at all given what AK said on Hullberside the other day.”

“If I hear 'building momentum' or 'taking the positives' one more time from Glanford Park personnel, I'll ram Knill's folded arms where the sun doesn't shine!”
