Renowned for his tireless work-rate, Scunthorpe United striker Chris Dagnall admits he would prefer his shooting skills to be commanding the attention.

A barren run of seven games without a goal was ended in midweek with a late effort against Huddersfield, leaving the 25-year-old hoping more will quickly follow.

And though Dagnall had a penalty saved by visiting keeper Ian Bennett in the same match, he insists his confidence has not been affected ahead of tomorrow's clash with Tranmere.

"It would be nice if I got the goals to go with the hard work," said the Iron front man.

"I wouldn't be bothered then at all. But just to get praised for hard work is a bit repetitive.

"I don't take it on board, to be honest. It means nothing to me.

"Forwards get judged on the amount of goals they score – that's what people watch out for.

"So I've got to start scoring.

"I think I've done allright.

"The last four or five games I've not had a massive amount of chances – I couldn't name many off the top of my head.

"But I keep plugging away and I got the opportunity right at the end on Tuesday.

"Hopefully that goal is the start of a little run and I can notch a few more in the next couple of games.

"I'm not too bothered about missing a penalty. I'm old enough and wise enough to know those things happen in football.

"It doesn't affect me. You've just got to move on and my confidence is just as normal."

No doubt however, it would receive a timely boost were Dagnall to find the net against his old club at Glanford Park.

Tomorrow will be the first time he has faced Rovers, the place where he started his career, since leaving for Rochdale in 2006.

"It will be nice," he said.

"But not many people are left from my time there.

"Les (Parry, Tranmere boss) was there. He was the physio when I was there, so it will be nice to meet up with him.

"He was always a massive character at the club. Everyone knew about Les.

"I was quite surprised he took over the manager's job. I never had him down as wanting that role.

"But he's done well and done very well with them this season.

"We'll see how good they are tomorrow.

"I've got a lot of great memories from Tranmere.

"I came up through the youth team there and enjoyed a lot of good times.

"Unfortunately it didn't work out in the end, so I moved to Rochdale, which I don't regret, and I'm here now."
