Scunthorpe Utd: Duffy - I'd feel left out if United climbed table without me

Shane Duffy has unfinished business at Scunthorpe United.

Far from looking to bail out of a sinking ship, the teenage centre-back is eager to stay at Glanford Park and help the Iron claw their way out of the relegation zone to safety.

Manager Alan Knill has confirmed he has already spoken to Everton about extending the defender's loan deal beyond its current January expiration date.

And the man himself says he would feel 'left out' if he abandoned United's rescue mission midway through the season.

"Of course I would be happy to stay," said Duffy. "I'm delighted to be involved at Scunthorpe.

"It's not good at the moment but our aim in the second half of the season is to climb up the table. I'd love to be a part of it.

"If I left and we did go up the table I'd feel left out and that I'd missed out. I wouldn't want that because I like it here.

"I'd love to stay here but it's just not up to me at the moment, it's up to Everton and the two clubs.

"I spoke to the Everton reserve manager (Andy Holden) and he said, 'it won't do you any harm staying, it's good experience'.

"I'm only 19 and still learning. Maybe I'm not ready for the Championship or Premier League yet.

"If I do a full season in League One maybe I'll be ready next season, more mature and making less mistakes.

"Hopefully I'll be able to climb up then, and hopefully someday play for Everton.

"It's experience I'm getting. I've never had this experience of losing, being at the bottom and fighting for points.

"It's a new experience for me, it's not what I want but it's going to come in football at some stage unless you're a top, top player.

"Hopefully I can learn from this experience and take it into my career."

Duffy added he has Iron boss Knill to thank for giving him his chance and is determined to repay him by helping to improve Scunthorpe's current form – starting against Chesterfield tomorrow.

"We're 100 per cent behind the manager," he said. "It's not the manager on the pitch it's us.

"The gaffer picks a team but we have to go out there.

"He trusts us to go out there, win a game and keep him in a job and make us better.

"He's a great manager and I'm delighted that I came here under him because he likes me and he's played me in every game.

"I think he's a great manager and we need to stick behind him.

"Every game is a six-pointer now for us because our aim at the start of the season was play-offs and higher, but now we're facing League Two so we have to try to win every game.

"That's the way we have to look at things.

"It's going to be a tense game tomorrow and no-one will really want to make a mistake because we're both down at the bottom.

"It will be difficult because both teams will really want to win.

"If we can stand up and face it and show everyone we're a lot better than Chesterfield then we'll do it.

"We've just got to believe in ourselves."

“I second that. Duffy has been excellent and it is a real pity that a player on loan has that attitude yet some of our own players do not have that spirit. He is more iron than some of them. It is players like Ryan, Mozika, Duffy and Robertson that need to be leaders. The ones Knill brought in, surprise, surprise!”

“It doesn't matter how many turn up, there will be no noise because there never is. The home support is dire. Its rather like being in a morgue.

Contrast it with the away support which is vocal from start to finish.

Shane Duffy, you have been excellent.”

“Every supporter is needed at the game tomorrow. We are all disappointed/saddened/angry about the current state of play but irrespective of our individual opinions about what is needed to put things right, some supportive noise from the terraces should help swing this relegation clash in our favour. Goodness knows what New Year's Day will feel like if we don't bag the three points.
Let's put the prejudices aside for this last game of 2011 and muster all the encouragement we can. If the players let us down again, PStoff will justifiably have more helpers to sharpen the swords that the overpaid, underachivers should fall on.”

“Oh dear - the club has really put the media spin into overdrive.

WORDS ARE A WASTE OF SPACE - we have been having this spin for three months now and all we have done is sink lower down the league.”
