INTERNATIONAL DUTY: Shane Duffy will miss United's FA Cup tie with AFC Wimbledon
It is a blow to boss Alan Knill, who is left hoping Paul Reid can overcome a groin problem which saw him substituted at Bournemouth.
Knill had hoped Duffy could arrange his travel plans to accommodate United's clash, but the defender is required to join up with Ireland first thing on Saturday morning ahead of facing Liechtenstein two days later.
"He has to be there at 10 o'clock in the morning and they wouldn't do anything about it," said the Iron boss.
"Shane asked the manager and he said 'no'.
"We're a bit disappointed but these things happen.
"He's an international so country comes first."
Scunthorpe will though be able to field loanees Oliver Norwood and Nicky Ajose this weekend.
Knill has been given permission from Manchester United and Peterborough respectively to play the duo in the FA Cup.
