Everton have recalled on-loan defender Shane Duffy from Scunthorpe United - but the Iron hope they have not seen the last of the talented 20-year-old.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international has returned to Goodison Park to provide cover ahead of the Toffees' FA Cup third round clash with Blue Square Premier side Tamworth after seeing England centre-back Phil Jagielka limp out of his side's defeat to Bolton on Wednesday.

Duffy - whose current month-to-month stay at Glanford Park was due to end next week - would be available to play a part in the weekend's clash, as he was refused permission to play for the Iron in their FA Cup matches with AFC Wimbledon in November.

Duffy confirmed the news this lunchtime on Twitter.

"I've been recalled back to Everton so my loan has finished at Scunthorpe," he wrote.

"Just like to thank everyone for their support and you never know, I could be back in weeks."

Duffy has been an almost ever-present since moving to United at the end of August, playing in 19 games and scoring once, in the 4-2 home win over Tranmere Rovers.

The Iron though, who are without a match this weekend, have confirmed they will be trying to bring the dependable defender back to Glanford Park.
