Scunthorpe Utd: Fans' views on what the Iron need during January
The Scunthorpe Telegraph asked three Iron fans to give their opinions on what the club should be looking to do during January.

Big money, big disappointment? Michael Nelson seems certain to exit Glanford Park in the next few weeks. Would you hold on to him?
Simon Faulkner, an Iron fan of 25 years...
This is a very important transfer window for Scunthorpe, where the main objective, I feel, is to offload some big money earners and disappointments like Michael Nelson, Mark Duffy, Michael Collins and Chris Dagnall.
Then we can start thinking of what we need.
A new right-back has to be a priority. Cliff Byrne is great, but seems to be struggling to get himself fit.
Andrew Wright is making more mistakes than ever
and Sam Togwell is obviously not happy having to fill in there.
An experienced centre-half would also be a great addition, after seeing how well Sodje did for Bury a couple of weeks ago,
someone like him (maybe a few years younger) would be perfect.
A young left-back for cover would also be useful just in case Nolan gets injured or suspended, but that may push the budget too far!
A creative midfielder sounds good if we cannot keep hold of Norwood, and again a little bit of experience would be lovely. I can see Michael O'Connor going in this window, so that would be a big gap to fill.
With Jimmy Ryan now getting himself fit this is a massive bonus as it's clear his best position is in the middle.
Damien Mozika (injury permitting) looks quality and I honestly feel that of all the positions, the midfield looks best equipped to cope with the rest of the season.
And now, the most important area, up front!
Following on from getting Ryan fit, getting Jordan Robertson in the team has been a massive bonus. Our problem though is putting the ball away.
In previous years we have been spoilt with people like Billy Sharp, Martin Paterson, Andy Keogh, Gary Hooper and Paul Hayes, who all earned themselves good moves.
While I see we are being linked with Connor Jennings, of Stalybridge Celtic, I feel this is a signing for the future (a better one than Adam Boyes too, I hope!).
If we can sell Dagnall or Grant then at least two strikers have to be bought, experience is key and I would love us to go for somebody like Freddy Eastwood or Clinton Morrison.
Wages wise, this may be a problem but players like Liam Hearn from Grimsby, or Jamie Vardy at Fleetwood are scoring for fun and I'm sure could cope with League One.
Going up a division, to League Two, Billy Kee from Burton Albion is having a very good season.
This is definitely the most important transfer window of Alan Knill's management career and I hope he gets it right as I believe he is the man for the job.
Once he gets his team in place, I'm sure we can again start aiming for the Championship.
Teenage season-ticket holder Luke McCabe...
I think January could be the turning point in the Iron's season.
The play-offs are definitely out of reach and with our position and performances, relegation seems an ever more increasing possibility so we have to make the most of a month where we can change our team and performances.
One thing we need to do is continue the search that has been going on since the start of last season which is to find a forward.
We need a player with either the finishing prowess of Gary Hooper or the skills to create something from nothing, like Paul Hayes was able to do. Constantly we have tried, and failed, to find a player with these qualities.
Our attempt this season was to try to get Nicky Ajose, however after very disappointing performances he's returned to Peterborough.
One option would be Billy Paynter, who has returned to Leeds from a loan spell at Brighton. He's been out of favour in Simon Grayson's side but has proved with Swindon he can play at this level.
The good news in terms of this position is that Jordan Robertson keeps giving more and more impressive performances every week now that he's returned from Injury.
Another position that needs to be strengthened is centre-midfield. Oliver Norwood has gone back to Manchester United and Sam Togwell and Michael O'Connor are out of contract at the end of the year. If Knill doesn't think they'll sign a new contract, they might leave this month for some money instead of at the end of the season for a free.
O'Connor has been the Iron's best player this season and it would really be a loss if he were to leave at any time.
Tom Kennedy hasn't been in the Leicester team since last season and if he doesn't have his loan spell with Peterborough renewed he may be open to making a permanent move to a League One team to get regular football.
I think the Iron will definitely avoid relegation, as long as we make the right choices and decisions this month. Our target for the second half of the season should be to make the top half of the table.
David Perks, a regular in the Doncaster Road End...
Scunthorpe don't need to do that much during this transfer window, as the majority of the squad is good enough.
My main gripe about the team as a whole though is that it is a young squad and therefore lacking in experience.
A new central defender to play along side Niall Canavan or Shane Duffy, should he return, is required - someone who is big and strong and has plenty of experience.
Other than that, the only other area that needs strengthening is up front.
What the side has lacked since Gary Hooper left is someone who can link up play and still get 20 goals a season. For me, the jury is still out on Jordan Robertson, as he hasn't played many games due to his broken ankle sustained at the beginning of the season.
Other areas that could be strengthened are the right back and right midfield positions. For the latter, someone who is both versatile (can play on either side of midfield to give Alan Knill some options) and creative. For the right back, again, he needs to be good at tackling, but like Eddie Nolan, be able to get up and support attacks.
If it isn't possible to get a new right back, then a left back would be preferred. This would allow Nolan to switch flanks and would balance up the defence a bit more.
A couple of players who I wouldn't mind seeing leave the club are Michael Nelson and Paul Reid, as in my opinion, they were panic buys last season, and they aren't that good.
However, before either can leave, we do need to buy another defender first.

“Bearing in mind that we are probably looking to ship out two/three major January signings from last year, who were going to turn our fortunes round, we do need to exercise care in this window
O'Connor has shone largely as a result of incompetence around him. He needs to be much more consistent, for me, to justify some of the plaudits lavished on him.
We need a Mirfin/Crosby style centre back and some cover at right back. If Mozika can stay fit, we should be ok in midfield and at least we now have some striker options.
The New Year team will have a refreshed look about it. The big question is 'Will it perform any better?'”

“Possible that Duffy and O'connor out. Cant see Grant going, despite all his haters out there. Love to see Nelson go - surely he must be on one of the biggest wages now Dagnall has gone - but who'd want him - Grimsby / Lincoln?”

“Probably get away with no additions up front & midfield. However if there are outers i.e. Grant , Duffy, & O'Connor we replace .Being frugal we just need a central commanding organiser in middle of defence. Not much to ask for ?”
