Scunthorpe United are hopeful of being able to do some further wheeling and dealing in the transfer market this week.

But forward Garry Thompson insists there is currently nothing in speculation suggesting he could be loaned out to free up wages in manager Alan Knill's playing budget.

Knill confirmed after Saturday's 2-2 draw at Walsall he is hopeful of adding a striker to his list of attacking options in time for the weekend's home game with Yeovil.

And having last week said he has to move players on before being able to add to the six signings he has made since the end of last season, Thompson had been widely regarded as one of the likely departees.

League One rivals Bury, Knill's former club, have been strongly linked with the former Morecambe man for the past couple of weeks.

But Thompson insists he is focused only on the Iron after netting his first goal in more than a year at the Banks's Stadium.

"There's nothing in the Bury talk, not that I know of personally anyway," Thompson told the Telegraph.

"I've not had a conversation with the gaffer about that, but obviously if it's something he saw fit then I'd have to look into it.

"At the minute my concern is Scunthorpe United and playing for them."

Knill also hinted the 30-year-old remains part of his plans, having spoken about adding quality to rival Thompson, Chris Dagnall and Bobby Grant, rather than replace them.

"We have some quality up front in Chris Dagnall, Bobby Grant and Garry Thompson but it'd be great to add some quality to that," said the United manager.

"I'd like some more competition, but we haven't got millions to spend. We've changed the team around and got five or six players in, which costs.

"We have to be patient with it, but the idea is we bring in some quality that fits into how we want to play and also adds competition for the players that are here."

Thompson wants to use his close-range strike at Walsall as a 'springboard' for the rest of the season.

After being sidelined for most of the last campaign through a troublesome groin problem, he is ready to go 'full tilt' in a bid to become a regular starter again for the Iron.

"The gaffer has told me I'm part of his plans here, 100 per cent. There's never been any discussion other than that," added the Kendal-born attacker.

"That's pleasing for me because I feel I'm getting there now and that I'm ready to put in the performances I know I'm capable of.

"I've felt all I needed was a goal to kick me on. It's a long season and there's a lot more games to play."

“Nelson seems to have lost form and confidence to go with it, a loan move for him would be good for all parties.”

“It would seem to defeat the object to bring in a striker to 'strengthen our attacking options' and then let another go out on loan. I would think it is more likely to be Nelson who is loaned out, as he seems to be out of favour at present.”

“Garry needs competitive game time that he is not getting here.I hope he goes to the right club for him & regains his sharpness. It seems like a good idea for both parties.Good luck .”
